He was thinking selectors were going Aussie way of dropping all the old guys if they did not retire. But this U-turn by selectors letting players dictate them surely must be making him very mad at himself for retiring.

From his comeback in SA to his retirement, Ganguly was among India's best batsmen. The selectors still wanted to kick him out and didn't pick him for the Irani trophy. Anyways, the 87 vs SA at Kanpur was the mother of any of the knocks you have mentioned. He was batting well agreed but I don't think 7 innings in two years makes him like the greatest.

Imagine the quandary if Ganguly had retired post-England debacle. It would have meant we would have anointed Raina the natural successor not realizing what a huge mistake everyone was making. Ganguly's retirement has at least weeded out the likes of Yuvi, Raina, Badrinath from Tests.

Looking at the way Ganguly was batting then and his stats (which compare well with the others), why do people find it so hilarious when he says that he could have played on?
