suraj Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 bmi is a pretty accurate scale you idiots' date=' stop cribbing about how it doesn't work for athletes or bodybuilders, 99% of earths population are not athletes or bodybuilders. its a scale which works and can be used to gauge the overall health for large populations[/quote'] No its not even for non-athletes. It is just one of the metrics that needs to be used in conjunction with several others and that too for some ppl, not all.

I am 34 years old, 5 9 and weigh 188 pounds, I run 25 miles a week (5 times, 5 miles). Lift weights 3 times a week and play some sport 3 times a week. My BMI comes at 28, does this correlate at all?
nballa Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 No it is not so i am returning the complement. It is supposed to tell who is fat who is not.. Does it actually do ? NO. No its not even for non-athletes. Really... I am 34 years old, 5 9 and weigh 188 pounds, I run 25 miles a week (5 times, 5 miles). Lift weights 3 times a week and play some sport 3 times a week. My BMI comes at 28, does this correlate at all? once again dont give specific examples, BMI was meant for a large population sample. i dont care if your friend is 6 feet tall and has a 33 waist and a 30 bmi. he does not represent the general population. example overall BMI of the population of usa is pretty high which correlates to the fact that most of usa is overweight which is true.

Correlation is not causation ....
The Outsider Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 example overall BMI of the population of usa is pretty high which correlates to the fact that most of usa is overweight which is true. BMI of US population is pretty high which correlates to the fact that the Math skills of US students are not very good, which is true.

You claim it is 99% accurate.. That is what i disagree. It is using two basic parameters which height/weight. You can say someone is obese or not, just by looking. THat is pretty much the same accuracy BMI promises. It gives you a rough estimate not accurate estimate. 99% [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJohCpifELE]Ball Park "99% Sure" Commercial - YouTube[/ame]
