Can't imagine why it got thwarted. The whole protecting small groceries is a load of hooey.

The whole protecting small groceries is a load of hooey. It eludes me too. I just can't understand why it is so stringently opposed by the government. In fact, it is opposed by every political hue and colour. The BJP also opposes it. So does the CPI(M). So does Mamta. So does the MNS :D (one of the very few times they've had a stand on anything that is not Mumbai centric). As far as I can see, the main gainers from FDI in retail will be- The farmers The urban consumers The infrastructure companies/ contractors GoI forex coffers- having a smooth supply chain will help us be more competitive in other markets. The only losers are going to be the middle men and the domestic retailers (many of whom are uncompetitive). These are labour intensive entities and will be forced to shut shop or improve.

Havent we hurt our economy as is with an extra focus on urban consumers? Are we looking for another splurge in growth of malls and shopping complexes, where everybody drives, parks his car and then does his shopping?? Hasnt that already created a sort of problems? By the by I dont quite see how consumers gain in the first place. If you walk into a grocery chain, say, in Mumbai or Gurgaon the urban consumers will be seen spending a fortune and buying many a days stale vegetable. Everytime I visit Mumbai or Delhi I absolutely hate the veggies that are being sold, huge cost and absolute rubbish quality. which is also when I take the next train back home to feast on real food.
