Possible all rounder when we play 5 bowlers on flat pitches. Not convinced of his bowling. You have to bowl most his overs at the beginning due to risk of slogging. Also when he is up against aggressive openers, he really is easy to hit I think. He doesn't respond well when he is attacked. His yorkers become 120kmph full tosses e.t.c Bowled reasonably well yesterday. His figures look good. But bear in mind he bowled most his overs at the beginning and with SL chasing a huge total-they were cautious at the start. Unfair to say he bowled better than ZK and Yadav. ZK is not what he was and Yadav is wayward anyway so pointless comparing him to them. Lets see him bowl well when India bowl first on these pitches. Will he bowl well at the beginning and at the death? Hope so but not sure...

^^^^ Nevertheless he will be the key for us in WC 2015. I honestly don't see us getting into semis without Irfan. We will need a pace all-rounder as in Aus pitches you can't have likes of Sehwag, Raina, Rohit etc. bowling 10 overs. You will need to have Irfan as a backup bowler supporting the likes of Ishant, Umesh & Aaron (don't think Zak will be around). Plus he is a pretty good batsman lower down the order compared to the likes of Jadeja in Aus conditions.

Openers do not come much more aggressive than Dilshan who did not find him easy to hit yesterday. Why would Sri Lanka start cautiously when they were chasing a big total. SL approach was to keep wickets in hand. It is a common misconception that you must slog when chasing a big score. On the contrary, you want a solidish platform and NOT lose wickets. That's actually the key. I wasn't impressed with his bowling. Yes he got swing but I just don't rate him. I used to back in the day when he first came on. He is too bits and pieces for me.

But remember in IPL in last two years he has been one of the most expensive bowlers I think.

lol at the bold bit. Actually on those kind of pitches we will play the extra batsman-it's the Indian tried and tested method. As Kohli just said yesterday-on flat pitches we can bank on 6 batsmen and 5 bowlers including a bowling all rounder. So he was basically saying that on pitches outside SC we would play 7 batsmen and 4 bowlers. This is the traditional Indian approach of batting protection outside the SC. In WC 2003 we did the same and that was in SA-it works well. No7 will be a batsmen or at most a batting all rounder who bowls part time. Someone like Rohit or Yusuf. It's a long time way but I think that will be the approach. If Irfan wants to play in that WC he will have to play as a genuine bowler. He won't be no7. Part timers work well when you use them at the right time, like the fall of a wicket e.t.c and also if you have a powerful batting lineup to back them which we do have. Our part timers are ok in 50 over cricket, they have had to learn to bowl few overs. UV has become more than a part timer.

This what I mean. I fully agree with you btw. It's similar to when a crap batsman scores 50 and you know it will extend his run in the team before he can be dropped again.

I honestly don't think Pathan is a guaranteed place yet. He tends to get predictable.

No performance in India wont tell us if he is good enough for Australia .. It will tell us if his swing has actually returned .. he already played in Australia this year and was decent. The swing he got yesterday I feel is due to the conditions in sri lanka. If he gets the swing back in India as well and be a little consistent only then he can be a fixed selection in our team. Plus after this series we dont have many away tours till another one and a half year hence we can only test him in India.

But if he was decent in Aus, where the WC will be played, and was able to swing in SL under lights, don't you think he will be an asset in Aus especially when we defend under the lights? He clearly adds more to the team than someone like Jadeja or spin based all-rounders. In Aus you need to have 3-4 pacers and I am sure Pathan is good enough to be one of those 3-4 pacers especially considering his lower order batting.

I agree and that's why I said "at this point". The point I was trying to make is that you have to give every opportunity to a player like Pathan who is more than likely to be a key player in WC in Aus.
