1983-2011 Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 An Indian fisherman was killed and three people wounded as their boat was shot at off the coast of Dubai in the southern Gulf. "The firing has led to the death of one Indian national and serious injury of three Indian nationals," Tarek al-Hedan, an aide to the foreign minister for political affairs, told the official WAM news agency on Monday. "The services concerned are now investigating this incident," he said. Lieutenant Greg Raelson, a spokesman for the US navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, said sailors aboard the USNS Rappahannock opened fire on the boat after it ignored warnings. "US ships have an inherent right to self defence against potential threats... The safety of our vessels and our personnel is of the utmost priority," he told Al Jazeera in an email response to a query. The shooting took place at around 2pm local time (10:00GMT) about 16km from the coast, the US navy said. The Rappahannock - with a crew of 81 civilians and three military officers - was headed into the UAE port of Jebel Ali when the small motor boat came within 8km of it, the navy said. Navy officials told Al Jazeera the crew first tried to hail the vessel via radio and on loudspeaker, as well as by flashing lights and firing warning shots. They then shot at the boat with a 50 calibre weapon. Boat removed Dozens of police and other Emirati officials crowded around the boat after it docked following the incident at a small Dubai port used by fishermen and sailors. The boat was removed from the port shortly afterwards. Rescue workers were seen carrying one person in a body bag off the white-hulled boat and placing it in an ambulance as fishermen looked on, the Associated Press news agency reported. The nine-metre long boat was powered by three outboard motors. retterimp Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 emotional responses aside, its shocking that the boat didn't respond to several warning signals. sailing in strait of hormuz with dangerous countries in the neighborhood like Iran, the boat staff would have to know that foreign armed ships are floating around, and they should have been given some training in how to respond to signals off other ships. anyway, UAE govt has good relations with India, so I'm sure there will be some compensation for the family of the dead. but it has great relations with the US, so its very unlikely that UAE will try to mess around questioning the navy officials

What was the US navy doing in the territorial waters of the UAE anyways? The fishing trawler was where it was supposed to be, doing what it was supposed to do. Just because the US armed forces hires retards who can't differentiate friend from foe, doesn't mean that other people should stop going about their daily lives. Didn't the brave US navy also shoot down an Iraqi ( or was it Iranian?) passenger jet a few years ago?

It then focuses in on a group of men walking in the street, including the Reuters journalists. The soldiers in the helicopter state that they see members of the group carrying weapons, ask their commanding officers for permission to engage (fire), and fire upon the group with 30mm rounds. The camera then follows Chmagh as he crawls along the road, and the soldiers can be heard urging him to pick up a weapon. A van, which was later learned to be carrying two children to school along with their father, arrives and several men pick Chmagh up and begin to carry him toward the van. The helicopter requests and is given permission to fire upon the van as it tries to leave. They fire upon the van with 30mm rounds. The video then shows ground troops arriving at the area. A soldier can be seen running as he carries one of the children wounded in the attack on the van. In the third attack depicted in the video, the Apache helicopter fires upon a building with Hellfire missiles. The video shows several armed and unarmed people entering the building, which is described as abandoned or under construction. The building was later learned to be occupied by three families. The helicopter requests and receives permission to fire upon the building, and shoots three Hellfire missiles. A man can be seen walking in front of the building as the first missile is shot, and several people helping the wounded are visible around the building as the second and third missiles hit. After the incidents, Reuters filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the video, without success. Several scenes from this video were described by the Washington Post reporter David Finkel in his book "The Good Soldiers". The Washington Post later stated that they never had the video.

Collateral murder/damage is a term coined by the powers that be to justify killing of innocents in a war zone. This was not even a war zone. The US navy chose its target in the waters of another country ( an ally at that). The fishermen were doing their jobs. The US navy had no business being there, and fired at some random boat, that too without any prior warning ( if the testimony of the surviving fishermen is to be believed). An equivalence would be an Indian naval ship firing at surfers off the coast of Florida after giving 'warnings' in Hindi. This action is as unjustifiable as the hypothetical scenario that I mention. Wonder what has become of this? Will the sailors be tried? Will the fishermen get any compensation or semblance of justice?
