We didn't learn anything from Murali Vijay fiasco

Rahane has done ZILCH in any form of international cricket after the England ODI tour of India. Also the fact that he never gets a run and plays in a start-stop manner doesn't help him much. Must be extremely low on confidence.

^That is true but it is the nature of the beast sadly when youre on the fringes of an international side. He has played very little international cricket since Eng. Of more concern is the fact that he did not have a great tour of WI with the A team. With regards to OP...its a true point but being able to adapt to all formats is requirement of the modern game for what it is worth...yes T20's are a waste of time but they're here to stay so we need our good players able to play it... In any case I would like to see him open in tests with GG vs NZ, so Sehwag can bat at 5 which for me is the way forward now that Sehwag is not getting any younger. Drop VVSL and play Pujara too

how many games has he played after england series ? always gets last game its international cricket not that easy to come and be in full form better drop him and let him concentrate on a tours and probably ask him to play county or something

2 ODIs (0 and 9), 2 T20Is (0 and 21), 3 innings in tour games (not crossed 15 in either) (against Australia) and 3 first-class matches against West Indies A (0, 5, 18, 5, 32, 2) Only decent performances have been a couple of fifties against West Indies A in the 4-match T20/List-A series. 15 failures in 17 innings in 7-8 months (across formats) doesn't augur well for him. True, he's not getting a run but I don't see him getting a clean run in the future as well unless one among Gambhir/Sehwag is injured.

looks bad.. but after australia he came back struggled in many matches then came into form (yes it takes time touring and not playing like htis is gonna hurt for sure ) then im sure u remember he cam back into form finished domestic tournament well after tht west indies a tour did well in odis format..tests were forgetable but note that he struggled against premaul guy not phast bowlers :P then he comes here sits out in 4 matches and is epected to be in 100 percent form from word go we got lucky with tiwary tht he scored in his 2nd game in the team but even he looked rusty this system of picking guys nad not including them in team is not healthy imo

i mean in homes games and in subcontinent cant we just pick 12-13 players like we suaully do in home odi series ? and in case of injury send replacement...let these guys develop at some other level like county or something wht the benefit in warming the benches this way if they are playing regular matches and are called to play they will be match fit and in form and match ready im thinking of system which england has... they send lions teams on tour in sumilar conditions and in case of injury just call up the player from a team... sorry for 2 posts :P

Fan of Rahane's batting but he has got to make these chances count. Even Tiwary was on sidelines for so long but he grabbed those chances. I'm sure he'll come good, has a very good technique maybe just low on confidence.

Since 25 October 2011 (last ODI of England tour ) Rahane has played a grand total of 2 ODI's spaced across 8 months (against WI and SL) and 1 T20.

It's not a question of how many chances Rahane has been given, it's more of a question of whether Rahane is the right player for the job. Rahane can play in the odi team as an opener and that too maybe in place of Gambhir coz you will need an aggressive opener to replace Sehwag. For the balance of odi team you need an aggressive opener alongside Gambhir/SRT/Kohli etc. You can't have another accumulator at the top as you will never be able to put up a huge total, which is what our strategy is. But odis he can still be considered in top 3 if the matches are played in ENg and Aus where the scores are not high and a 260 should be able to win you the match. But for T20s Rahane is a misfit. His natural game is not suited to going bonkers from ball 1 which is a pre-requisite for opening in T20s where you need to make the power-plays count. If Sehwag is not around we need to find a suitable replacement, maybe somebody like Mandeep who's naturally aggressive and shot-making comes naturally to him. Rahane, like Vijay, can be successful at IPl coz the bowling quality is low but you can't expect Rahane to replicate similar success at intl level.

theres no point playing 7 bats for 20 overs.Irfan n Ashwin r more thsn enough to compensate.if Sehwag isnt available I'd rather open with Virat n GG. about Rahane he went slowly because Kohli was going great guns but overdid it.hes certainly got it.

When I said 'Any form of international cricket' I meant the tour games in Australia and the India A series as well.
