1983-2011 Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 Is Baba Ramdev credible enough to lead a campaign against corruption? CNN-IBN has accessed an excise intelligence report that exposes how he has failed to pay taxes amounting to Rs 4 crore. Nandita Rao, lawyer and critic of Baba Rambev, has alleged that hawala money of the Hindu right wing has been major part of Baba Ramdev’s Divya Yog Mandir trust. “This is all hawala money of the Hindu right wing which he (Ramdev) is laundering. Because no one can earn so much money teaching yoga. There is no doubt about lack of credibility and lack of honesty of Baba Ramdev,” Rao told CNN-IBN on a late night television debate. Also on the debate was social activist Medha Patkar, who said that it is for the law to decide whether Baba Ramdev is honest. “As far the credibility and honesty is concern I think the law should take its own course. Let us wait and watch,” Patkar said. Patkar also said that the Income Tax report doesn’t effect the work and issue Ramdev is raising. “That doesn’t effect every work of theirs. That doesn’t effect every issue they are raising,” she said. http://www.firstpost.com/politics/is-ramdev-credible-and-honest-enough-to-lead-anti-corruption-campaign-410045.html
1983-2011 Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 BABA Ramdev a tax evader? New Delhi: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who is leading an agitation against black money in the country, is in the eye of a storm yet again. Just 48 hours before Ramdev embarks on yet another anti-corruption protest, CNN-IBN has accessed an excise intelligence report that exposes how he has failed to pay taxes. Ramdev has shared dais with powerful chief ministers and created political storms in the country with his anti-black money movement has also been called names by political leaders. "He is a thug. He goes to Claridges Hotel to strikes deals and then talks about black money," says Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh. A top secret investigation report prepared by Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence brings Baba Ramdev under scanner himself. The note reads, "The income tax department has denied the charitable nature of the trust through an order dated 30.12.2011. Accordingly, it is proposed to investigate and demand the service tax liability under the club and membership services." What this note shows is that Baba Ramdev's organisation Divya Yog Mandir trust was not paying service tax for the money that it was generating through making members for this trust. It also states that the trust paid a service tax of Rs 19.78 lakh on property that it owned and had rented out only after an enquiry was conducted. The report reveals that Ramdev's Divya Yog Mandir Trust has not paid a service tax of Rs 4 crore it owed to the government. Ramdev's trust had collected Rs 40 crore as membership fee from the followers of the yoga guru and the service tax on the amount comes to Rs 4 crore. The report by Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence also says that the Ramdev's trust has not yet furnished financial details to the Income Tax authorities. According to the report, the trust collected Rs 37.98 crore as membership fee from 2007 to 2011. The Kanpur unit of Central Excise Intelligence has registered cases against Randev's trusts - Patanjali Yogpeeth and Divya Yog Mandir Trust. Showcause notices have already been issued to Patanjali Yogpeeth and an investigation against Divya Yog Mandir Trust is still on. In what could make things more difficult for Ramdev is a complaint made by Swamy Karamveer of Maharishi Patanjali foundation making serious allegations of tax fraud against him. The complaint against the Divya Yog Mandir trust has now been forwarded to the commercial tax departments at Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Kolkata, Raipur, Indore and Uttarakhand. http://ibnlive.in.com/news/antiblack-money-crusader-ramdev-a-tax-evader/279731-37.html
DomainK Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 Ramdev made a joke of himself last time. And I have a feeling that the reason for this campaign is a demonstration of power and common-man following on the wake of the new upcoming political party from Anna. Ramdev wants in. And I must say, he is presenting a very good case here to Anna Hazare and co. But if I was Anna, I would resist the temptation.
ravishingravi Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 "14 months after he was bundled out of Ramlila Maidan in a midnight police swoop" Yup and one person was actually "killed" in process. No kidding.
1983-2011 Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 AkshayaMishra Someone must ask Baba Ramdev what exactly he wants. If he is serious about black money then he must make definite demands from the government. Just making a lot of noise from Ramlila Maidan is a total waste of the country’s time. Team Anna wanted to fight corruption and Lokpal was its solution. One may or may not agree with its remedy but still it was something concrete. Ramdev has nothing of that kind. Moreover, his list of demands is endless: Lokpal, black money, CVC, CBI and what no. The yoga guru must set himself small goals if he wants real change. The show of popularity does not serve any purpose. If does not start thinking clearly soon, then he might soon find his cheer leaders abandoning him ArunGeorge_FP Baba Ramdev’s movement is seeking the creation of the Lokpal, independence of the CBI, electoral reforms and getting back illegally stashed wealth in foreign banks. All of these issues when seen in isolation are worthy issues to lead a campaign for. Sceptics may argue that Ramdev, who himself is accused in multiple cases, cannot lead a campaign against social ills he himself may be guilty of. However, until his guilt is proved by a court of law, he is innocent and cannot be brushed away. He does enjoy the mass support that maybe even Anna Hazare didn’t, and if the ends he is seeking are worthy, the focus should be the issues he is fighting for and not who is leading the protest.

1983-2011 Posted August 13, 2012 Author Posted August 13, 2012 21:21 (IST) Baba Ramdev Arrested, Released and still at Ambedkar Stadium The story so far... 1. Baba Ramdev who was released by the Delhi Police at 7:50 this evening, refused to leave Ambedkar Stadium, which had been turned into a holding pen of sorts for the yoga guru and his supporters. At 7.30 pm, there were over 8000 people there. The police told them they were all free to leave. "Will we go?" asked Baba Ramdev. "No,"they shouted back. Baba Ramdev demanded that the government must provide food and water to everyone inside the stadium as it was a 'temporary jail'. 2. Baba Ramdev was arrested at around 2 pm while marching to Parliament. He , and 300 of his supporters, were stopped at the Ranjit Singh flyover, half a kilometre from Ramlila Maidan, where the yoga guru had been on a hunger strike for five days. 3. "Congress hatao, desh bachao (remove the Congress Party and save the nation)," he said at the start of his "protest" walk in the afternoon with thousands of supporters as opposition political leadership rushed to be seen near him. "There is a Gangotri (fount) of corruption flowing through that one party," he said on top of his bus to NDTV. "We will make sure they lose." 4. Political support was offered at his camp this morning by BJP president Nitin Gadkari, and Sharad Yadav of the JD(U). Both pledged their parties' support to the yoga icon. The BJP also protested against black money in Parliament today, resulting in the adjournment of the Lok Sabha. 5. The Congress spokesman called the rally "a political stunt". The Congress spokesperson Janardhan Dwivedi said the Finance Minister has already explained in Parliament how the government plans to combat black money. 6. It took the police five hours to move Baba Ramdev through the 3-4 kilometres from the flyover where he was arrested to Ambedkar Stadium in central Delhi. 7. Baba Ramdev had not sought police permission to march towards Parliament. He had been authorised only to hold a large sit-in at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan. 8. When he started that camp five days ago, he declared he would not target a political party or personality. That changed dramatically today. He called for the dismissal of the Congress-led government for its alleged inability and disinterest in recovering crores of black money. 9. Baba Ramdev has been demanding a robust ombudsman law to keep checks on government, a strong and independent Central Bureau of Investigation and efforts to act against tax evasion and illegal money sent to banks abroad. 10. Last year, Ramlila Maidan was packed to capacity, when the police charged in at midnight to force the camp to disband. Many people were injured. The Supreme Court blamed both the Delhi Police and the charismatic guru for risking the safety of thousands. http://www.ndtv.com/blog/show/baba-ramdevs-march-to-parliament-stopped-252874
