To say that " Zaheer was the biggest reason for winning the world cup " is as ridiculous as saying that " Dhoni did it for us at the most crucial stage " Or " Yuvi won the world cup for us , like India usually wins the tournament when he does well " Its quite obvious to everyone that in the 2011 tournament only the knock out matches were important as all the top sides were guranteed a place in the quarters . Zaheer as a bowler , just sucked against both Pakistan as well as Lankans which were the two most crucial matches of the tournament , he cant be hailed as the biggest performer just on the basis of a half decent spell against Australia . His contribution against Pakistan was quite ordinary . His overall economy was around 6 which was the highest for an indian bowler in that match and dismissed only choker akmal while the match was still alive . Lets recall all the key bowling moments of that Innings : After the dismissal of an ordinary walking wicket , it was munaf that dismissed hafeez who was beginning to look set . Then arrived yuvraj who bowled a tight line and lenght and chipped in with 2 wickets ..... Being a part timer adds more weightage to his contribution Due to loss of 4 wickets , Misbah went into complete shell while chota akmal was trying to break free . The momentum was still with us untill Chota Akmal started dominating yuvraj and scored a few boundaries. Suddenly the Indian camp were feeling the heat again , Drinks were called and just on the very first ball after th drinks Bhajji dislodged the stumps of the dangerman Chota Akmal to shift the momentum back in our favour . After the dismissal of Umar , only Razzaq and Afridi were capable of getting the quick runs with Misbah holding one end of the wicket . Munaf outfoxed Razzaq with a slower one and Bhajji got rid of Afridi after a few overs with all the pressure of scoring quick runs falling on the shoulders of Misbah , at that point the fate of the match was more or less sealed in our favour . All these while when the wickets were falling there was some real good work done by Nehra to keep the flow of runs in control and he too chipped in with a few wickets after that. In all these memories from that match I do not recall any significant contribution made by Zak , Dare I say going by his figures in that match he was easily the worst Indian bowler. Indians were very fortunate as Misbah never opted to take the powerplay when Razzaq and Afridi were still at the crease . There was a high probability of Zaheer being brought back during the powerplay and getting smashed by the powerhitters just like how Jayawardena/kulasekara/Perera ****d him for only 44 runs in his last 3 overs during the powerplay in finals at Mumbai . When Misbah took powerplay the match was way beyond their reach . Zaheer came in and started bowling like a Tiger , quite aware that the match is already over . Misbah still gave him some good phainty but the task was too much . In the finals : It seems that people do not remember how Zaheer gave away 44 runs in his last 3 overs against Sl .... Thats 14.6 rpo . He received phainty of a lifetime not only from Jayawardena but even from the likes of Kulasekara and Perera to such an extent that Lankans went on to score 275 when even 250 was looking difficult at one stage . The momentum that was on our side for the first 45 overs of the match was suddenly blown away in matter of just 5 overs thanks to beast Zaheer . I agree that he was our best bowler in the tournament but certainly not the best overall performer. My Rankings would be : 1) Gambhir 2) Yuvraj 3) SRT=Zaheer 5) Raina ( Most Underrated performer for us in the tournament ) 6) Dhoni Dont care about the rest .

Did you even watch the games? Let's revisit his 3 performances in the knockouts... Q/F against Aus - Zak was the main reason Aus didn't get away and score 280+ against us in Q/F. He kept openers quiet and came back to dismiss Hussey & White with the old ball. The guy was amazing against Q/F. S/F against Pak - He never let Pak openers get away and got the first wkt when it looked like Pakis may get off to a decent start. He was quiet economical throughout and only leaked runs at the death when the match was already over with Pakis needing around 18-19 rpo. Final against SL - Zak was the reason SL wasn't able to do anything at the start. His first 3 overs were maidens and he took an early wkt to boot. If he had decent support from other end instead of an inconsistent Sreesanth, SL would have been in a deep hole and the match could very well have been over at the half-way stage. Then Zak came back with the old ball to get Kapugadera out. Yes, he went for runs in his final 2-3 overs but that was the only poor performance/spell by him the whole tourney and Lankans would have finished with a much higher total had Zak hadn't bowled wonderful opening and middle over spells. Zak was the 2nd most important player for us in the tourney after Yuvraj. Zak was the only bowler to whom Dhoni could go to and he was amazing throughout.

Msd and Munaf need to be much higjer. Zak may have gotten the numbers to flaunt but Munaf bowled exceptionally well in the tournament. And literally no credit to msd for being the best wicket keeper batsmen at no7 and his cool captaincy style? Wow!

Did u even watch the Semi final vs Pakistan :hysterical: Zaheer was taken out of the attack after being easily scored by Pak openers in his first 2 overs. It was Nehra and Munaf (to some extent) who put a strangle hold on Pak top order. Yep he took Akmal's wicket but that was the only decent over he bowled in the first 20 overs. Seriously :haha:

Pakistan got a decent start during the chase as they were 70/1 at the end of 15th over and the target wasnt 360 but only 260 . Everything was on going as Pakistan would have liked at that stage , 9 wickets were in hand , the required rate was well below 6 rpo and main power hitters were yet to come . All the good work from there onwards was done by Munaf , Nehra , Yuvi and Bhajji . In a tournament where our ghatiya bowling line-up headed by Zaheer Akram couldnt even defend scores of 330 and 296 , this semis was probably the only match that was won by our bowling and Zaheer had the least contribution towards it among all the bowlers .

Agreed with your top 6 with the following changes but Yuvraj no. 1 and Zaheer no. 2. Also' date=' Dhoni needs to be given more credit for the way he handled our bowling especially Zaheer.[/quote'] and what for his handling of Chawla :haha:

You're quite strange man - bowlers bowl in the first innings too btw and Zaheer was instrumental in keeping SL and Australia is check during the QF and Final. Surely that has to count for something.

and what for his handling of Chawla :haha:
He did drop him for the knockouts didn't he :giggle: Dhoni tried to find an attacking option in Chawla as Indian bowling lacked any match-winner. He hoped Chawla would do the job for him and tried to give him as many chances as he could knowing that India will make it to knockouts anyways. Since Chawla didn't improve Dhoni never picked him for the matches that really mattered in the knockouts.

It wasn't as if he was carted for 30 runs off his 2, was it? Eventually Dhoni still had to go to Zaheer for the 1st wkt when he saw the openers were getting in. Akmal's wkt was important for us as he was the batsman who could score at a brisk rate. Hafeez, Younus Khan etc. could be controlled but if Akmal had gotten in India would have struggled.

One of the reasons Pakis were 70/1 instead of 90/0 was due to Zaheer. He removed the dangerous Akmal who was the dangerman at the top. With batsmen like Hafeez, Younus Khan, Misbah and Asad Shafiq etc. the run-rate would have increased as none of them are natural stroke-makers. Akmal was the one wkt India needed early to ensure Pakis don't get away and Zak took that wkt. Maybe you need to take a look at the Aus game as well as without Zak we would probably be chasing 300 or thereabouts and out in the Q/F itself. Oh by the way the tie against England in the league match was possible due to Zak when England had the match wrapped up. It was a pity that likes of Chawla and Munaf couldn't even manage to control England's bowlers coz Zak had teh match won for India from a losing position.
