The Outsider Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Over the past year, I've seen many flippant posts like "Dhoni delivered the WC", "Yuvraj won us the WC" etc. etc. Just wanted to see how you would rank the 2011 squad in terms of importance to the WC win. Here is my rating: 1. Zaheer - for me he was the single biggest reason for winning the cup because he was the only fast bowler in the tournament to perform consistently across all matches and venues. Pivotal moment being the dismissal of Hussey in the QF. 2. Yuvraj - provided balance to the side with his accurate spin bowling and firepower with his batting. An amazing performance. 3. Gambhir - besides the epic innings in the final, was consistent through the tournament scoring 400 runs. 4. Tendulkar - scored runs by the buckets and his knocks in the QF and SF were crucial to the final success. 5. Raina - for his crucial knocks in the QF and SF. 6. Dhoni - for his brilliant innings in the Final. 7. Sehwag 8. Nehra - mainly for his SF performance 9. Kohli - mainly for his Final performance 10. Munaf 11. Harbhajan - mainly for getting rid of the Beasts in SF and his expression thereafter. 12. Ashwin 13. Chawla 14. Pathan 15. Sreesanth.

I would have munaf ahead of nehra other than that you are spot on.

To make this simpler, I will divide my rankings into three tier grades. Grade 1 - Consistent performances throughout the tournament including knockout games Grade 2 - Hot/Cold performances Grade 3 - Satisfactory or there about performances. This is done so that one should not feel that one performance is greater than the other and ultimately it's a team game. Grade 1 - Zaheer Khan (just in case it was Hussey in the QF not SF), Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir Grade 2 - MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Munaf Patel, Suresh Raina, Ashish Nehra, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin Grade 3 - Sreesanth, Yusuf Pathan, Piyush Chawla

Calling Sreesanth's performance anything close to satisfactory is a heinous crime against the word satisfactory ... Chawla should also not be there .. Infact these two players should be degraded to Grade - 50 which should just be created for players with performances such as sreesanth and chawla

Calling Sreesanth's performance anything close to satisfactory is a heinous crime against the word satisfactory ... Chawla should also not be there .. Infact these two players should be degraded to Grade - 50 which should just be created for players with performances such as sreesanth and chawla I used a euphemistic term - the kind of players I merged there should for itself tell you what I consider about their performance. "Satisfactory" is just because I didn't want to abuse at this particular point of time.
Laaloo Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 1. Yuvraj 2. Sachin/Zaheer. Sachin had a good semi final and QF whereas Zaheer was pretty bad in both SF and Final especially in the death overs 4. Gambhir 5. Raina

The Outsider Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 ^ Yeah, Gambhir has to be grade 1 in the above ranking. The performance of Gambhir compared to Nehra, Ashwin etc. was in a different level.

Agreed with your top 6 with the following changes but Yuvraj no. 1 and Zaheer no. 2. Also, Dhoni needs to be given more credit for the way he handled our bowling especially Zaheer.
maniac Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Pathan over Chawla...he did play a good knowck against Ireland...yes Ireland were we were kinda taking our own sweet time knocking off the runs...Chawla was useless
ganeshran Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Yuvraj had a bigger role to play than Zaheer. Despite being a part timer he delivered with the ball in almost every match and played crucial knocks with the bat too 1) Yuvi, 2) Zak 3) Gambhir 4) Sachin 5) Dhoni Rest

Ultimate_Game Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 :hysterical::hysterical: and the way he handled others should he get some discredit also. Dude winning a World Cup with the likes of Nehra, Munaf, over the hill Bhajji, cr@p Sreesanth and "confident" Chawla deserves a lot of credit. He just had one go to bowler in Zak and Yuvraj as a part-timer in the middle order who bowled out of his skin. In fact we hardly managed to get a team out the whole tourney and in fact don't remember us getting any of the top teams out other than Pakistan. With such a bowling track record, winning the WC is commendable and yup as a captain he deserves a lot of credit. I am sure you would have been over him like a rash in case India had lost.
Andrew Peter Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 What did Zaheer do to be on the number 1 spot ? It sounds like he picked up a couple of 5-fers in knock out matches and bowled out the opposition for under 100.

Magneto Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 Everyone knows we won the WC because of Sreesanth only :dontknow:
