The team's golden run of 08-10 was built on 4 things. 1) A DOMINANT opening pair in Sehwag and Gambhir 2) Tendulkar's resurgence into arguably the world's best batsman again 3) VVS being consistent for a change and 4) Zaheer becoming a world-class seamer, giving an otherwise below-average bowling lineup a bowler who could get BIG wickets when called upon. None of this holds true anymore. Sehwag's well into his 30's now and that's usually a death sentence for batsmen who're entirely reliant on hand-eye coordination. Age slows your reflexes, the eyesight worsens and your lack of technique gets exposed. That's what we've seen the last 2 years. He can still be dangerous on low, slow flatbeds, but how many of those are there? Gambhir overachieved out of his ASS during his golden stretch. He's a batsman with suspect technique against fast bowling, but through sheer grit and self-belief he started playing one BIG inning after another and became India's most reliable top-order player. Consistently giving the team great starts along with Sehwag. But sooner or later his imperfections against pace were going to reemerge, as smart teams watched tape and figured him out, and that's what's happened. He's usually gone within the first 5 overs now and even when he does stay, he fails to convert his starts. Tendulkar had an inexplicable 2nd prime from 08-10, as he recovered from the injuries of 04-06 and set out to prove he wasn't done. He became ridiculously determined and along with a surprisingly consistent VVS, totally solidified the middle order. Tendulkar was the EMBODIMENT of clutch during this stretch, playing numerous match-winning/saving/setting innings for India. But age is an enemy that claims everyone, often rather quick, and that's basically what has happened with him. He's simply OLD now and given what he and India achieved from 08-10, there's probably a lack of motivation on his part too. He has nothing to prove. The county stint in England after getting dropped changed Zaheer's career. He came back motivated, in shape and with a whole new bag of tricks. It seemed like whenever India needed a BIG wicket, he came through, but sadly, the same things that initially got him OFF the team struck again - injuries and a poor work ethic. It was just sad to watch him in Australia. He's currently back in shape and has bowled fairly well in this Test series so far, but isn't what he was from 07-10(age related, I'm sure) and more importantly, the batting lineup hasn't give him anything to bowl to either. It really all starts with the batting. Sehwag/Gambhir/Tendulkar/VVS - the reason why we achieved #1 Test status, they are all too old now or in VVS and Gambhir's case, either retired or exposed. India simply doesn't have the capability to put a lot of runs on the board anymore if the pitch has anything in it for the bowlers.

Whom exactly am I "discrediting"? Saying that Kallis is better than Tendulkar is not discrediting Tendulkar just as saying Lara was better than Dravid is not discrediting Dravid. Kallis has done enough over his entire career to be considered the premier batsman and his stats speak for themselves. Your argument about Kallis not facing SA bowlers is akin to someone saying Richards wasn't the top batsman in 80s coz he never faced the WI pace attack or that Ponting wasn't better than Dravid as he didn't face McGrath and Warne. You can only play against the opponent you are put up against and Kallis has shown he has done well enough while averaging 57 with the bat over his career. To me Kallis has edged Tendulkar and the stats prove the same.

Fine, accepted on the point of Kallis not facing SA bowlers, but the fact remains, when he faced the last world class bowling opposition - the Aussies, he continuously failed. I have quoted stats and explained my opinions. You have not quoted a single statistic comparing Sachin and Kallis, yet you state Kallis as the better batsman as a matter of fact. What is your argument ?

Age is the prime factor here. It's not like he can be dropped so that he can come back and regain his form. Let him play the remaining two tests and then bid farewell. Let Zaheer play as long as he is fit. I dont see a better bowler in sight. As for SRT, there is little point in analyzing his loss of form. Even if he returns to form & has a glorious run, given his age the upside is too little to be worth it. At this age he should be doing what Kallis does to deserve a test spot. Love of cricket, 20+ years of service et al are meaningless rhetoric! For whatever he gave us, he got plenty of money & fame. He can play domestic cricket (and IPL) and continue to enjoy & contribute to the game. And we'll thank him with a great farewell for his 20 years of service to Indian cricket. A spot in the national team is not his personal property to allow him to make a personal decision on this. He should be told and not asked. And his exit may also bring back the much needed DRS and some respite to our bowling attack.
