These are individual awards which reward individual brilliance over the qualification period. Wonder what 'playing for a team in the bottom half of the table' has got anything to do with it. Sanga scored 1000+ runs in 6 tests against the best spin attack in the world. If that is not 'phenomenon performances' wonder what can be called as 'phenomenon performances'. Add to it 1400+ ODI runs scored as a keeper batsman.
