Gandhi & Shaheed Bhagat Singh had totally different & opposite views. Gandhi kept getting slapped by the Brits & Bhagat Singh threw bombs at them firangis. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev & Rajguru were sent to gallows by the Brits...& Gandhi was shot dead by a Indian called Godse...go figure.
Yet it was Gandhi's philosphy which united us as a nation. No amount of violence could have led to the British leaving us, it would have become a matter of pride for them. It is clear you have absolutely no idea about Gandhi's philosphy and in the process you are also insulting the memory of Bhagat Singh. There is a reason Gandhi is among the most respected historic figures. Bhagat Singh was among the most courageous of people ever but there were many like him across the world. Gandhi was unique It takes much, much more courage to stand up against tyranny when you cannot hit back. It takes much more courage to keep on defying a force and not using violence. Hurling bombs and shooting people are the easiest thing to do. Ask the Taliban. Ask the NRA. Ask the LTTE. Ask any violent terrorist organisation. Also see how many times even justified causes were won just by hurling bombs. Gandhi is a name respected across the world and we Indians have narrow minded people liek you who abuse the name of someone who sacrificed so much for your independence. If this is not shameless and pathethic, I dont know what is Today's world needs Gandhi's philosphy more than anytime else. I have heard youngster's proclaim, Gandhi's philosphy doesnt work in today's world, its a tougher time. Gandhi's philosphy does not work in today's competetive world. Bull-sh!t. Today you have the luxury of freedom, no one to opress you, today's its much easier to follow his philosphy than any time. It was much tougher when you would be beaten up for stepping into a restaurant or even gathering outside. Does it take more courage to hurl a bomb or to walk openly and defy the British's salt law? Why does courage always have to be associated with violence and retaliation? IMO the most courageous thing would be to not retaliate in violence but keep on defying the other with your peaceful action. Heck, Gandhi commanded a mob of people who could have openly killed any number of policemen and that would have been the easiest thing to do. Yet he kept getting hit, kept getting shoved in jail and he kept coming back peacefully to protest. That there is courage of the highest order

British did not leave India bcoz of Gandhi' date=' [b']actual reason was second world war & England wanted troops..also no way Brits could rule a big populated country like India for a long time. So when they had to fockoff...they just gave credit to this mariyal Gandhi....better to say to the world..." we left" btw..what are your thoughts about Godse of Maharastra who shot dead Gandhi if you consider him so damn great?
WW2 ended before India's independence :dontknow:

British didn't leave India because of Gandhi, they left because of their colossal fu>ck ups in some of the countries they previously occupied. World War 2, the mess they created in Palestine/Israel, overthrowing the nationally elected Iranian government in favour of a crony who was close to them etc ; Not to mention, they puppy dog America in whatever America wants to do

WW2 was probably the biggest reason considering they left so many other countries as well following it. There are many things to back this up but I don't see the point in discussing. There is a .001% chance anyone believing "_____ was the reason" will change their mind reading this thread. So what is the point of discussing! This is like the 5th time I've seen this discussion already. :haha: Let it go people, ignore this discussion.

Well hardcore Gandhi loyalists will never understand that...to them...it was like "Gandhi forced them out by fasting & getting smacked by lathis"..doh
:hysterical: By the time the British left, they looted the country for all it was worth. Perfect time for them to nick off anyway, pretty sure they didn't want to stay back and deal with the mess of partition whilst their own country was bombed to the stone age in World War 2.

Any major event will have multiple causes - your tone towards Gandh is condescending. He may not be the picture perfect person we are painted in our text books but he did play a major role in the independence movement.

Do you know how many people Gandhi commanded and how many came to the streets, were beaten up and were put into jail? We wonder at Anna having a few thousand followers, Gandhi made an entire nation wake up and be brave. British leaving was a culmination of lots of thing. Gandhi's movement generated enough negative publicity against the British, they were forced to sit up and take notice. if we had gone the violent way, world opinion would have been firmly with the British. Just like LTTE using violent means didnt serve them right. It would also have affected the pride of British as they couldnt be seen as being driven out of the country. Freedom would have take much longer

If only things were this easy. British would have consolidated a bit more in India and tried to milk us even more if not for the mass movements across the country. These movements also brought a lot of sympathy and forced world pressure on the British

So did other freedom fighters like Chandra Shekar Azad...I salute them. btw....you did not reply about why Godse killed Gandhi if he was such a 'mahatma'
Why did Booths assasinate Lincoln? Wasnt he one of the most respected Presidents of America and worked for a cause as good as equality for African Americans? Every good cause has had its share of fanatical opposition. Booths couldnt think about giving equal rights to Blacks, Godse couldnt think about giving any rights to the muslims. If such fanatics is what you look upto and feel the need to put down someone like Gandhi, all I would say is you will be in a very small minority in today's world and would find it difficult adapting to different kinds of people

Nope....he being shot by his own countryman meant that he was not right in whatever he decided.
Shouldn't have much to do with that. All types of people in every country. But let it go man, this has been discussed too many times. Thread is also being derailed. :orderorder:

Godse was a Hindu nationalist who killed Gandhi because he viewed Gandhi as being impartial to Muslims. So what if Gandhi was impartial to Muslims, what gave Godse to shoot him the in the first place? Godse used violence to achieve his goal against a man who was opposed to all forms of violence! Thats the greatness of Gandhi, he helped India achieve independence through a passive non violent movement. British did not leave India because of Gandhi alone but Gandhi's movement had a lot to do with it.

Not quite, there are two issues here: 1. Giving full credit of India's independence to Gandhi's non violence movement is misguided. 2. The British leaving India was not a direct result of Gandhi's movement but Gandhi's movement was one of the major factors in them leaving.

They needed troops during the war..not in the end..war started in 1939...lots of British troops were required.
Chacha Nehru and Desh-Pita GandhiJi won us freedom not Hitler! Bhagat Singh was a communist. Also he was an Atheist. We today are world's 3rd largest economy and in 2030 we will be close to USA, all this possible due to Gandhi-Nehru vision. See other nations which got freedom with India ie. Pakistan/Bangladesh/Nepal/Bhutan there condition is bad really bad.
