youngindia Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Population + ability to tap that manpower is the key . the developed countries have an advanced ability to tap their manpower due to favourable socio economic condition. they offer more versatile avenues and opportunities for growth for their poor as well. Even developed countries have to invest in sport to get the results. Australia had a poor performance at the montreal olympics. this led to a revamp of their ssytem that has produced excellent sportsmen especially in swimming and cricket in the last few decades. england made a concerted a effort to improve their system and has started reaping their rewards in the last 2 olympics. obviously england will struggle vs more populous nations germany and brazil .and these two bigger nations are capable of tapping their population for footballing purposes as well. The ability to tap manpower refers to myriad vital factors like available infrastructure, the standard of coaching ,competition from grass roots level, talent scouting ability, expertise of former great players. for example in football, you would not bet on a champion outside of brazil, germany ,france ,argentina and italy often. one can exclude argentina and add spain now. only these countries have the standard to produce champions over a longer period of time. socio economic conditions play a role as govt can spend more money and there are people with sport as a career option. with better resources at dispoal and more people particpating in sport, india can improve in sports, provided it keeps growing the sporting system in all aspects . from no medals , we have started winning medals from 1996 onwards.
Lurker Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Been watching cricket when England were crap. As I already said between the 80's and 90's. Not denying it but India have been crap since forever with the exception of the last 10 years. The asian Brits supporting India or Pakistan also happens in other countries like SA or Australia so that's an irrelevent point. No it does not. Asian Brits almost loathe English, Asian Aussies don't. One can understand why a Pakistani who carries English passport may have a soft corner for Pakistan ahead of England, but it is hard to fathom why he would absolutely want any other country to beat England. Which is what the situation is. Maybe you "should" focus on that, should being your word :--D
youngindia Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 during the time when india was a average mid tier test side, you were relying on a few metros and few schools. not on a billion population. india's cricketing fortune improved when more players started emerging from outside the metros and batting evolved to a level where there were two or three players averaging over 50. this was an improvement over 80's where gavaskar was in 50's while amarnath, vengsarkar ,GV were in 40's. the main points are 1. Many parts of the country especially tier 2 cities require better standard in infrastructure, coaching etc to compete with the metros. Pujara is the first big potential batting star from a tier 2 city in a long time. raina and jadeja are there as well. 2. many parts of the country like idinvidual states , lack the standard to produce competitive international cricketers.there is a 100million state like bihar which is not proudcing a star cricketer(discounting jharkhand and dhoni) . the biggest state UP is only recently proudcing international cricketers as a state of its size should. 3. both india and india a batting teams are still dominated by batsmen from metros. pujara and co are only starting to make dents. 4.The competition levels for bowling and fielding is still mediocre. from my own experience int he 80's , i can say its not easy to find bowling and fielding coaches as easily as a batting coach. there has to be concerted effort to increase competition and quality of talent from grass root levels, 5. As for the countryside of 600000+ villages(majority of india), forget it. jadeja is the closest to a star.

Irrelevent anway. They can support who they want.

How different is your successful run lately than say India?? Atleast we won World Cups in LOI and T20, and beat our endearing rivals. What have you blokes done in the old blighty?
jairamesh Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 We dominate Kabaddi. We invented it and have won every single World Cup to date the womenz too dominate their field.

What have you blokes done in the old blighty? Actually no, in the 70's the only team we got smashed by was the windies and they hammered everyone. Aus and England were sort of even and we stayed that way up untill the mid 80's when we went to **** for 15 years. Our record of winning tests is far superior to india since 2000 and this was India's greatest ever spell in test cricket. Your greatest ever test team has still never won a series in SA. Our overhyped 2005 team even managed that. We've won in Australia, what century before India achieves this? The 2011 WC was fixed for India to win. Why did you guys get the home games when you and Sri Lanka were joint hosts?
special K Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 We dominate Kabaddi. We invented it and have won every single World Cup to date the womenz too dominate their field. Yeah we dominate darts so what. Our women are Cricket world champions and who cares?

Good luck discussing with the trolls :two_thumbs_up:
youngindia Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Look at how britain made a concernted effort to improve in the last decade. britain's attempt to improve -in 2004 http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2004/jul/19/athletics.comment1 after success of 2008 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/9374912/Team-GB-medal-target-for-London-2012-Olympics-is-fourth-place-with-48-medals-across-12-sports.html " UK Sport has injected £312 million, mostly National Lottery money, to all Olympic sports over the past four years, specifically to deliver success at its home Games and to cement fourth place on the medal table." http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/dec/06/olympic-record-boost-sport-participation how public particpation is inspired by successes.

special K Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 It's a fair point why Sri Lanka didn't get to host that final. Should have been played at a neutral venue in Bangladesh, Pakistan or even UAE.
youngindia Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 How the aussies revamped their system. http://www.sportsscientists.com/2007/04/why-are-australians-so-good-at-sport.html " Thus at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, Australian athletes won only 5 medals of which none was gold. Since the Australian national identity is based, in part, on a belief of superior athleticism – the bronzed Aussie battler overcoming all athletic obstacles in a hostile world – this was a threat too perilous to ignore. A state of national emergency was declared and the nation's top sporting administrators convened to plan a way forward. By 1980 a proposed blueprint for future success had been accepted; the government committed to provide long term funding to establish a national centre of excellence - the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) – to be built in the nation's capital, Canberra, close to the seat of government"
special K Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 Why can't India do this sort of funding? Do you guys have a lottery out there? If so where does it go and surely some should go towards sport.
jairamesh Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Yeah we dominate darts so what. :hysterical: Our women are Cricket world champions and who cares? you don't dominate it, Australia have more titles.

Now imagine giving that much money to Saint Kalmadi to invest in sports across India:hysterical: I rather the GOI spend nothing.

We are like U.S,we dictate how the world of Cricket is run,not necessarily set examples...hope that explains your question
maniac Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 ^ Which translates to Yes,we do dominate cricket....not just the way you are implying
jairamesh Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Why have lungans won a WC and yet England nearly eight times richer and four times the population won zilch?
