Cevno Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Rahane is not a odi/short format player  Play him in Tests, he will unleash his potential there. He is not a test opener either. Has succeeded in the middle order for Mumbai as he likes to keep the score ticking with singles at the start. In tests that is a problem and in ODI's the field is up and he gets under pressure.
Cevno Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 All I'm saying is that likes of Bevan, Dhoni, Yuvraj and Raina have proven that Tests and odis are very different formats and it takes a different skill set and mental make-up to succeed in one format compared to another. You may come across a few who can succeed in both formats (Richards, Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting etc.) but they are few and far between. Most of the players will be suited to one format at best. Of the current lot Rahane and Rohit belong to the category who are better in longer formats compared to shorter formats. Similarly likes of Yuvi & Raina are more suited to shorter formats. Pujara and Kohli are most likely to succeed in both but again it's not a guarantee. The best approach would be to pick players in a format in which the player does well domestically. If we are looking for Tests, Pujara, Rahane and Rohit should be given a shot ahead of others as they average around 60 in FC cricket. Similarly if a spot opens up in odis I would go with players who have done well domestically. At the moment Pujara, Ishank Jaggi and Kedar Jadhav average in 50s with a knack of playing long innings once set so I would get them in ahead of others. But picking likes of Rohit & Rahane in odis based on their FC performances, or Yuvi & Raina in Tests based on their odi performances will not help anybody. Not the team and not the players. I hope selectors understand that and change their selections accordingly. Agreed.
Sooda Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 He has opened for Mumbai A lot and done well and even scored a ton for BP XI vs Aussies a few years ago opening. So he can open in the longer format and hopefully he can get an extended run there in test cricket. Bear in mind this guy did ok in England opening against Broad and Anderson, scoring at a fair clip too. Also did ok when Eng toured in that random ODI series we had late 2011.. scored 90 when we chased down 300 in Mohali. Id back him to get out of this, he has not batted much over the last few months (one match for Mumbai apart from the LOIs for India I think... ?) and he should just stick it out try and get lots of time in the middle and hopefully itll click. What is true is that ODIs is not a great format to try and find some form in this way, but he has no choice there. At least the selectors are going to be patient with him. Rohit too has scored enough good runs in ODIs to know he can play. Good batsmen can and have to really be able to adapt to 50 over cricket at least if not T20s
ganeshran Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 What is worrying is the way he is getting out. A huge gap between bat and pad will hurt him in any format, not just ODIs. Let us hope it is a temporary problem and not a technical one.

Other than covering for Injuries for the most part. Agree with the rest of the post though.
Pagalpanti Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 People need to have patience, its not like he's got consistent chances. He needs to play a string of 8-10 ODI's and then be adjudged. There is a technical flaw with his batting, leaves a lot of gap between bat and pad. Also didn't look as free-flowing as he did during his debut in Eng tour 2011. If he fixes it, he should be scoring runs in no time. His backfoot play really makes him a good option for us given next world cup is in Aus-NZ.
Crookbond Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Even if Rahane has not opened for Mumbai he plays at No. 3
yoda Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 He has been terrible so far, time of us to try out more guys for the opening slot while keeping Rahane in the loop. Given the quality of FC cricket, we can't expect anyone to come in and fit into international standards.
The Outsider Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Likes of Gavaskar' date=' Boycott, Younis Khan, Slater, Mark Taylor, Vaughan etc. would never be considered good odi player. This is a small sample and I'm sure if you look at stats you will come across more examples. Good performances in a format doesn't guarantee success in another.[/quote'] Gavaskar did well in ODIs, Younis Khan has been okay, not close to being great but decent. Boycott hardly played ODIs. You will find very few players who have done well in tests but have been complete failures in ODIs like Vaughan but you will find many more examples the other way round. And you have to look at the reasons behind the failures as well. Rohit and now Rahane are not failing due to any specific ODI circumstances but genuine technical faults which will remain even in the longer formats. Rahane should be given more time to prove himself but it's just laziness of analysis to say he is failing because of the format.
Dumbbells Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Guys like Rahane, Pujara are never going to successful in ODI cricket. I would put my money on the likes of Unmukt , Mandeep. I can see the lack of fire in Rahane and Pujara.
SLICKR392 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Even if Rahane has not opened for Mumbai he plays at No. 3 He usually plays in the middle order in FC. Usually at #4
Vivek.S.123 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 He usually plays in the middle order in FC. Usually at #4 That's where Rahane should always bat and not open
G_B_ Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 rahane has opened plenty of times for mumbai. Give him time. Lets not forget Rahane did do well in the IPL opening and does have a good T20 records and start
