At least 150 people, including 78 policemen, were injured and a constable suffered cardiac arrest and was battling for life in hospital as street protests over the gangrape of a 23-year-old woman on board a bus a week ago turned violent in the heart of New Delhi on Sunday. All roads leading to Rajpath and India Gate were sealed after police resorted to lathicharge and use of teargas to clear protesters from the area. Delhi Metro announced that nine stations in central Delhi will remain closed on Monday. Late on Sunday night, the gangrape victimÃÔ emotional father issued an appeal to the protesters to stop vandalism and help police in bringing the culprits to justice at the earliest. He also appealed to the people to pray for his daughter, who is fighting for her life at a city hospital. Å®y daughter is stable now. She is conscious. I appeal to all to refrain from vandalism and help the police so that the process of capturing and sentencing the culprits is successful, he told a TV news channel. He also said the fighting capacity in his daughter still remains the same. ŵhe capability to live and fight on is still the same in my daughter. Please pray to god that my daughter recovers. Vandalism will do no good. I appeal to you donÃÕ cause any damage so that both you and I can carry on in peace. No words can describe how brave my girl is..., he said. Among the injured were journalists and police officers including Joint Commissioner Taj Hassan, Addl Commissioner K C Dwivedi, Deputy Commissioner Bhola Shankar and Addl DCP Sanjay Tyagi. Police had to rescue Chief Minister Sheila DikshitÃÔ son and East Delhi MP Sandeep Diskhit after he was surrounded by protesters. Women in the crowd complained they had been molested by ÅÈoons who also attacked the police with stones and lathis. Constable Subhash Tomar was on ventilator support at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. While police said he had been beaten by protesters on Tilak Marg, doctors said he had suffered cardiac arrest and there were no visible injury marks. Special Commissioner (Law and Order) Dharmendra Kumar blamed ÅÉooligans for the violence. He said unruly elements had ÅÉijacked peaceful demonstrations. In its report to the Home Ministry, police said some Å×ested interests had joined the protesters and were instigating violence. Cases have been registered against ÅÖnknown persons? At Jantar Mantar, yoga guru Ramdev and former Army chief V K Singh addressed protesters who clashed with police after they were stopped from marching towards India Gate. Aam Aadmi PartyÃÔ Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia sat on a dharna near Hyderabad House. BJP youths also took part in the protests. Unlike Saturday when most protesters were college students, SundayÃÔ crowd comprised people who had come from outside the city, including neighbouring states. While Ramdev was directed to Jantar Mantar and later Ramlila Maidan, police said the protesters did not pay heed and kept moving towards India Gate. Despite prohibitory orders in place, a few hundred first made their way to India Gate. The numbers swelled and one police estimate later put the crowd strength at over 10,000. The clashes started around 11 am and continued till late evening. Protesters hurled stones at police and broke barricades in a bid to head towards Rashtrapati Bhavan. Police said 12 DTC buses and as many PCR vans were damaged. A Doordarshan vehicle was also attacked. Police resorted to lathicharge at least ten times and lobbed 250 teargas shells apart from using water cannons. TV crews said water cannons were also directed at them to stop live coverage. Many said their cameras had been damaged. Chased away from the India Gate lawns, protesters targeted bystanders and damaged buses and cars along the way, using barricade poles as weapons. Late on Sunday night, Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury went to India Gate to persuade protesters to leave the spot, but her efforts failed. This was the first time a Congress leader came to India Gate to engage with the protesters.

Delhi protests: Ambulance carrying five-year-old critically-ill child stuck in traffic

New Delhi: If you were out on the roads in central Delhi today, especially in the New Delhi area, you perhaps would have earnestly hoped that Monday too was a holiday. For traffic was a nightmare with practically all roads leading to the India Gate circle blocked, resulting in long queues and endless delays - courtesy the violent protests there over the weekend over the gang-rape of a young medical student in the national capital. But even as vehicles honked impatiently, none perhaps understood the fallout of this delay more than Ashok Kumar, an ambulance driver at the Kalawati Sharan Children's Hospital in Connaught Place. Kumar, accompanied by a young doctor Abhishek, was transporting a five-year-old critically-ill child boy, Aryan, for an MRI scan to a private clinic in south Delhi. It was essential for the ambulance to save time and cut through the maddening traffic. Kumar, thus, attempted to get past the barricade near Rail Bhavan near Raisina Road, only to be told that the road was blocked. He swiftly maneuvered his ambulance and tried to zip past the traffic with the emergency siren on. All this while, we were behind the ambulance, watching its occupants desperately figuring out a way to get past the traffic. We decided to follow Kumar. The ambulance was stuck at one end of the road while our car was in the middle of a bumper-to-bumper traffic at the other end. We got out of the car and ran towards the ambulance to try and find out as to what the situation was. We were a little unsure of catching up but still gave it a shot by running towards the ambulance. "We are taking this child to Gulati's MRI clinic...the child is critical and is in the ICU," said an animated Kumar as I tried to catch my breath. "Did you try and inform the police," I asked. "We did but the police didn't listen, they just gave me an alternative route...I know the route, but time is of essence," Kumar told me with an angry look on his face. As my colleague, cameraperson Sajji Lal, started focusing on the child and his uncle at the rear end of the vehicle, I asked the doctor how serious the patient was. "He is Aryan and he is five years old...he needs an immediate MRI scan," said Dr. Abhishek. "But doesn't your hospital have that", I asked. "No, I don't think so," said the doctor but was quickly interrupted by Kumar who said, "No we have an MRI facility bot not to deal with all kinds of emergencies." As I wished him luck and asked him to start the siren again to negotiate the heavy traffic, the cops at the intersection allowed the vehicles to move. We wished Aryan a speedy recovery but couldn't help asking one question - why can't the Delhi Police understand that an emergency cannot wait?

Delhi gang-rape protests: VK Singh, Baba Ramdev booked for inciting mob and provoking crowd

New Delhi:Former Army chief VK Singh and yoga icon Baba Ramdev have been booked by the Delhi Police for inciting mob and provoking crowd at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi yesterday. Three cases of rioting have also been registered by the police. Protesters led by Baba Ramdev and General Singh had clashed with the police at Jantar Mantar yesterday afternoon when they were prevented from marching towards India Gate, the epicentre of protests against the gang-rape in a moving bus of 23-year-old Amanat (NOT her real name) in New Delhi on December 16. After a brief speech at Jantar Mantar, Baba Ramdev along with General Singh and others had started marching towards India Gate but they were stopped by the police. As soon as Baba Ramdev and General Singh got down from the dais, police had cordoned off the area and the protesters sat at the spot. However, supporters started marching towards India Gate and tried to break the barricades following which police resorted to use of force. Two persons suffered injuries in the incident. "Government should set up fast track courts and punish all the rapists. We want death penalty for all the accused," Baba Ramdev had said.

Shame really that it has turned into a political fiasco. Funny incident happened on tv today, one protestoe (young male) was asked why is he part of it.... his answer was we want to protest the incident hence we are fighting the police.... respoter asked what exactly is his demands.... and believe me he was clueless as hell :cantstop: his friend came to his rescue and said we want justice :omg: No wonder sherlock

Utter shame that a regular policeman died was murdered. The scumbags that are responsible deserve as much of a punishment as the rapists. I really despise this insane protesting business and manhandling of the policemen by the mobs. At the end of the day, you will need a police force in a civilized society. The mantris already treat the police like sh1t, you can't demand change by treating them the same.

:facepalm: Police constable died of heart attack and Delhi police arrested people which were not even part of protest.Some were going to relatives house some were purchasing mobile and few were helping constable.Section 307 attempt of murder was imposed http://khabar.ibnlive.in.com/news/88231/1 As long police don't stop misuse of law no girl in her right mind will approach police for sexual crime.who knows what section will police impose on her instead of registering her complaint

Nobody is going to do anything about that. That is the hypocrisy of indian society.

There are conflicting reports about the constable's death. There are eye witness accounts that he had a heart attack. One doctor mentioned that he had no external injuries. There are reports that the 'five representatives' Maino met were NSUI (Kangress Student wing) and the violence started after that. Maybe by NSUI cadres after getting proper instructions from top leadership. Kangress can stoop to any low in executing dirty tricks.. I wouldn't. be surprised if they had removed the life supportof the constable to sacrifice him and blame the peaceful protesters...

The doctors say that he had internal injuries that were fatal. It's possible that he received the internal injuries in an assault and then sometime later collapsed, which would look like a possible heart attack to witnesses.

People are emotional fools, media can make them cry on the death of a dog .On the other hand they can convince them it is O.K to kill millions of people
