I guess the answer could still be likely after all the Indian public quickly forgets things. ( Same public voted for the gov despite the 26/11 attacks) Modi being a portrayed as a PM candidate can go both ways. It can also solidify groups together. Congress is also vary of that which is why they always make statements to remind the 2002 riots . However, the affected state which was Gujarat has already moved forward from that incidents. Even during Gujarat elections promotions, neither party talked about these riots. So it's stupid of Congress in still trying to sell that and yet certain do buy that. The reasons are well-mentioned through a combination of dirty politics and injustice. They can easily win IF the opposition is fragmented and without a proper leader. But if the opposition (NDA) gets its act together then UPA doesn't stand a chance.

But they seem too busy with infighting, making retarded comments, supporting senile oldies to pay attention to this and are giving away some of the goodwill earned

Direct Cash (Vote) Transfer - Aapka paisa, aapke haath Food security bill (big bang announcement likely in the next few days) These two will be the game changers. And while the opposition continues to flounder, Congress has strategically launched the DCT in three states Rajasthan, AP, Maharashtra, three states from where it won 20+20+33= 73 seats. Add the food security bill to the list and Congress would have covered its bases quite well. They may not get 206 seats but look set for 150+ easily which at one time looked like reaching single digits.

They may not get 206 seats but look set for 150+ easily which at one time looked like reaching single digits. these (and other schemes that will be launched as the elections get near) can certainly have a huge impact but if NDA can get united and raise the corruption issue properly then that would trump all schemes of UPA.

Unless economic situation improves in the next twelve points, handing out more doles won't be easy for the government. India is running twin deficits, Indian companies will locked out from foreign borrowing and further social expenditure (which will be massive) resulting breaking into state bank, which will only crowd out private investment. So Congress socialism at it's best. Also central government will continue to leech of the productive states, like Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Karnataka, TN and Maharashtra, who bring the majority a combination of export earnings and tax revenues. These 6 probably drag rest of India.

And most voters in India decide to vote on how their state govt have performed regardless of whether its assembly or lok Sabha elections. So how many states are in favour of BJP. Only big states I can think of are Gujrat and Rajastan. Certainly not much in southern or eastern India IMO BJP need lot more coordination and coalitions ( where Modi will be a -ve factor) if they are to just prevent congress from coming back to power again. I would prefer NDA govt rather than UPA but think 3 rd front coming to power is more likely than BJP with UPA comping into power with Left support like in 2004 most likely outcome IMO unfortunately.
