I have been following cricket since the 80s and I know for a fact that the captains who have been groomed to be captains are not dime a dozen. In most cases captains, become. Cases in point - Was Ganguly an "alternative" when he became cap? Was Dhoni an "alternative" when he became cap? Was Smith an "alternative" when he became cap? Was Nasser an "alternative" when he became cap? Was Sammy an "alternative" when he became cap? Thing is, Dhoni does not understand Test cricket. Let me make this clear - Dhoni is the best ODI cap we can have. But Dhoni is not a good Test cap and we need change there. That's my beef. Please understand that I am differentiating between Test captaincy and ODI captaincy

Kohli and Pujara have barely established themselves in the side and they have no experience in test cricket to become a captain. Should they should also be burdened with captaincy now when they need to step up as batsmen if we have any chance of challenging Aussies ? Gambhir has been in terrible form over the last 3 years and has looked very suspect against good pace bowlers. Sehwag has declined as a batsmen. Their places are not even guaranteed in the side.

Look, Dhoni is a defensive captain. It works very well in ODI cricket where batsmen win games usually. In 2009 in NZ the bugger played like a snail to set a target of 600 to NZ and we didn't win that game. Now, in Test cricket if you think you cannot defend 400-450 in the 4th innings then you need to understand that you have no business winning that game or even effing drawing it. Dhoni does not understand Test cricket. Period. We need a change there. We will find an alternative. This TINA thing is the only thing that is hindering us

That's because the batsmen couldnt reach 300 on many occasions in Eng and Aus where oppositions were racking up 500-600 every time and bowlers couldnt pick wickets to save their lives. What else can a captain do in that situation ?

Next, do you want a captain to do 'better' than Dhoni OR you want to replace him just for the sake of it? The names you suggest are just like any other BCCI administrator. If no one can do 'worse' than Dhoni, all of them are the same. Since, all of them are same I would choose to go with pedigree.

Dhoni is past it. dhoni was made a young captain even when he was not an "alternative", no reason why Kohli cannot be
