jairamesh Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Indian Navy take a step closer to having a fully functioning nuclear powered Ballistic Submarine (SSBN) :isalute: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Underwater-N-missile-test-successful/articleshow/18213517.cms NEW DELHI: India' s elusive nuclear weapon triad - the capability to fire nukes from the land, air and sea - has taken another leap closer to becoming an operational reality. Even as the indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant gets ready for sea trials, the country's first underwater ballistic missile " successfully " completed its developmental trials on Sunday. With this twelfth test of the K-15 missile conducted from a submerged platform or pontoon in the Bay of Bengal, DRDO officials said the 750-km range submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) was now ready for induction. "The two-stage missile, which rapidly climbed to a 20-km altitude after being launched from the pontoon, was tested for its full range over 700-km. This was its last developmental test, in which all mission objectives were met," said an official. Only the US, Russia, France and China have successfully developed SLBMs till now, " he added. ... The absence of an operational SLBM, however, has for long left a " big credibility gap " in the country's nuclear deterrence posture. Only a nuclear-powered submarine, which can stay underwater for extended periods, armed with nuclear-tipped missiles can provide a country with effective and difficult-to-detect "second or retaliatory strike capabilities". Next step is for a test launch off India's first indigenous SSBN, INS Arihant (currently undergoing sea trails). A successful test will ensure triad nuclear deterrence, and more importantly a SSBN option provides a far more effective first and second strike capability.
ganeshran Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 INS Arihant should get commissioned this year with K-15 missiles. In next 3-4 years, DRDO will add the K-4 to its arsenal.
jairamesh Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 will we actually ever use it? India and China are the only two countries to have officially pledged to "No First Use" doctrine. US, UK, France, Russia, Pakistan and Israel have rejected this policy and maintained they will use it as preemptive strike to defend their interests. So at the end of the day, there are six nations out there who are trigger happy

jairamesh Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 what do they mean by "No First Use" policy? not surprised by the other 6, considering how many wars they have been involved in past 60 years in the name of freedom Only use nuclear weapon after being attacked by nuclear weapon. So hopefully if Indian and Chinese officials have credibility, then there is no direct threat of nuclear attacks between the two. But the less said about the others the better....NATO have shamelessly even said if their troops are attacked by a nuclear weapon in a war on foreign lands (e.g. during Iraq invasion), then they would retaliate with a nuclear attack. And these are the same nations calling for nuclear weapons disarmament.:giggle:,
ganeshran Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 India and China are the only two countries to have officially pledged to "No First Use" doctrine. US, UK, France, Russia, Pakistan and Israel have rejected this policy and maintained they will use it as preemptive strike to defend their interests. So at the end of the day, there are six nations out there who are trigger happy Israel has an position of deliberate ambiguity around their nukes, they don't even acknowledge the existence of the weapons Even India's no first use policy applies only against non nuclear states, which rules out Pakistan and China. Which makes sense since unless our second strike capabilities are watertight, (something that has never been tested before) why place ourselves at a strategic disadvantage?
surajmal Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Next month's Nirbhay is equally important. Not so much from technological standpoint but rather inventory. Brahmos is a damn expensive missile and has very short range (300-500 km), so India needed a tomahawk type. I also think once they are done testing K-15 fully, K-4 will come pretty quickly. DRDO is mature enough now with the missile program that it can mix and match different technologies pretty easily.
vayuu1 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 IMHO opinion we should go for more SLBM versions of missiles rather then land based coz they are difficult to detect , also I am not convinced with 4 missile silos in arihant , we should atleast have 12- 16 silos rather than mere 4 , SLBM, SLCM and air based are the way of future,SLBM versions of Agni 3,5,6 will provide us a credible deterence, but we should altleast have a SLBM ICBM of 8500 km range to attack our enemies without the danger of getting noticed.
Malcolm Merlyn Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 It is the K 4 or BO5 that was launched yesterday.TOI is perhaps misreporting it.K 15 has a range of 3000km.Enough to take care of our enemies. Sent from my GT-I9103 using Tapatalk 2

Sent from my GT-I9103 using Tapatalk 2 Wrong k15 has a range of 700-750km,k4 range is 3500 km ,k5 range is 5000km SLBM version of Agni 6 6000 to 8000 km
vayuu1 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 More importantly with the path breaking technology developed by India with the development of certain composite materials ,which will help in increasing range of our missiles to upto 40% of it's original range it's good to have a credible deterrence ,when u have such F'ed up neighborhood .
Clarke Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Hopefully the indigenous platform will be ready as per the schedule. will we actually ever use it? Si vis pacem, para bellum.
vayuu1 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 will we actually ever use it? Hopefully no,coz such weapons coz mass destruction ,these weapons are made so that no one country can dare to attack u.
ganeshran Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Wrong k15 has a range of 700-750km' date='k4 range is 3500 km ,k5 range is 5000km SLBM version of Agni 6 6000 to 8000 km[/quote'] 700-750 is only on full payload. It can reach 1500+ kms provided the payload is lighter.
urbestfriend Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 oops..I read it as "underwear ballistic missile launched" and I was like :WTF:
vayuu1 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 700-750 is only on full payload. It can reach 1500+ kms provided the payload is lighter. That I know ,I was referring to the guy who said k 15 range is 3000 km,but gannu do you think we should put cap on our missile range at 6k km or ,do u believe we need a missile with more range say a 10k km missile considering u just can't trust the western world.
KeyboardWarrior Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 oops..I read it as "underwear ballistic missile launched" and I was like :WTF: :hysterical:
CG Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 That I know ' date='I was referring to the guy who said k 15 range is 3000 km,but gannu do you think we should put cap on our missile range at 6k km or ,do u believe we need a missile with more range say a 10k km missile considering u just can't trust the western world.[/quote'] Cap is to address such concerns, Once the technologies like re entry are mastered range is not a problem. Also its mirv so it can launch nuclear strikes agianst many places on a single warhead like peacekeeper.
