The 3.5 per cent 'exclusive quota' each to backward Christians and Muslims have been carved out of the 30 per cent reservation for Backward Classes in the state. The exclusive reservation would benefit Christians converted from scheduled castes, CSI Christians in some parts of the state, Latin Catholics and both Tamil and Urdu speaking Labbai Muslims, Rawthar Muslims and Marikars. They are part of the 142 castes declared as Backward Classes in the state. However, it is not known whether the Christian fishermen, who come under the Most Backward Classes, would be covered under the new reservation. They are among the 41 castes declared as MBCs. This is for the second time that Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has sought to provide exclusive reservation for specific castes in the backward classes catagory. Needless to say this religions based reservation is not going to happen somone will file a PIL and court will drop it.. Jayalalitha had announced extra grace marks to certain SC/ST students in medical/Engg to hand them Engg/Dr degrees and jobs later on. This is nothing new in this reservation politics practiced in that state since 50s. I guess most of the Brahmins have been driven out of TN so much that they are getting public sector jobs in Bangalore, Mumbai etc thru another reservation category called "shifarish".
