You know why that is Shwetabh? Think about it, I think you will get it. (Hint - it comprises of Om Puri, Deepa Sahi, Saeed Jaffery and Manohar Singh.)

Also, Vanraj Bhatia coming from DD circles, had more influence on the "national Award" jury (Government).

Tamas was a milestone, and pound for pound the best (tele)film on partition (closedly matched by Garam Hawa). Music played an important role in the movie. Keep in mind that in 80s the violent was not as easy to show as it is today. It was often music and eyes of the protagonist that conveyed. Of course I put Ijazat music ahead, but I can appreciate Tamas, and Vanraj Bhatia.

It's somewhere in between. I am basing my opinion of "art" cinema by using movies like "paar", "sparsh", "Aakrosh" etc. Gulzaar's movies had songs, poetry, a story with a begin and an end, pretty much mainstream . It was released in theatre, unlike "art" movies that we hear only from DD sunday afternoon movies and after they get national awards,

I had heard the popular song Katra Katra before but never knew it was from this movie. :dontknow: The word Saamaan from the song Mera Kuch Saamaan is loaded with meanings which make sense in the context of the movie. Sudha asks Mahinder to return Maya's stuff which is still in their house. When Maya gets her tangible belongings, she retorts back by sending a letter to Mahinder, in the form of a poem where she asks Mahinder to return the intangible goods - her memories and moments she spent with him. One can say that Maya is still longing for Mahinder and wants him back. Mahinder is no longer physically close to her but his memories are deeply ingrained within her. Mera wo saamaan lautaa do, ek ijaazat de do....bas jab is ko dafanaaoongi.. main bhi wahi so jaaoongi. The above line has such deep meaning. Maya finds it tough to cope with the loss of her love and she is longing for some kind of closure. She can't forget Mahinder as her past memories, with him, haunt her all the time. Only when these memories are gone can she get rid of Mahinder, and move on. A lover might be gone physically from one's life but the memories linger on causing nostalgia and pain. The rendition of emotions, between two lovers/married couple, in Indian movies is sometimes very touching. Nuances and subtleties are brought forward in a manner, where it transcends the physical aspect of the relationship. Lurker, I am glad you made this thread. :hatsoff:

You summed the sentiments perfectly there. I liked the way you used "tangibles". That is exactly what it is. I have always been a little split on that. Your rendition makes perfect sense. Specially as she chooses the word dafan, meaning dead/closed. My rendition, and maybe it is because of my own romantic tint, is that if one is ever so deep in love the closure never really happens. In other words send me all the memories back too so I can breath my last with them, or when I breath my last may your memories be with me. I must have been around 17-18, when I first watched the movie and it did resonate with me at that age. As time progressed, it resonated even more. All actors were fantastic but Rekha was unbelievably good.

More than anything all three characters were developed excellently.. None of them wishing bad for each other yet kept on hurting. All three did justice to their characters.. specially Rekha and Naseeruddin. Lurker miyan aise he aur enlighten karte raho...

Mahendra is hardly a philanderer but he still keeps trying to be in do naao. Maya does not want to break up Mahendra's life but still misses her and reminds him of the missed time. Sudha is perhaps the most reasonable character but she ends up hurting Mahendra once by taking off and then restarting a new chapter in her life quite recent to her meeting again with Mahendra. I find it fascinating that none of the characters acts in any way out of bitterness or vengeance. Each has his grievance and yet there is a depth of romance all around..
