Dharavai and its leather tanning industry was started by Tamil migrants in the 1960s when they moved in large numbers. Excellent leather products. Leather industry is indeed one of the biggest in Asia's largest slum "Dharavi".In recent years some Slum Rehabilitation Schemes buildings have been constructed . Having said that there is still lot of work left to make it a better slum. The politicians want the slum to be as it is. Thats because then the poor are forced to stay with illegal electricity and water supplies, illegal accommodation.So they have to bow to the politicians to get all the basic facilities rather than demanding them by right.If they upset the political parties by not voting for those, who helped them get illegal basic facilities then those parties can get rid of those illegal slums by some way or other causing problems for the slum dwellers. Poor cannot rent houses nor buy them, so the slum concept will remain in "Dharavi" as well.
