Im Vijayan, Ancheri, Usha were stars in our generation but not really for the present youth of Kerala, let alone the legendary Jimmy George who most Kerala youth haven't even heard about. Sad but true. Things like the English Premier league are followed by wealthy kids many of them too obese to even play. Football has always been popular in Kerala but what is stunning is the growth of cricket, any half decent grass ground in Kerala has youth playing cricket on it. The success of rare matches in Kochi stadium is enough proof, even celebrity cricket with portly stars huffing and puffing on the ground fills up the stadium. Turn out for any football match at the Kochi stadium is appalling. Cricket has and always been no.1 in Chennai, by a fair distance!!!

True. T20 is most popular in Kerala. In fact Cricket popularity started picking up in Kerala only after the advent of T20 cricket. Most Keralites I know watch only T20 cricket and ODI cricket only it its the world cup. Test Cricket absolutely not. If Kochi Tuskers had continued in IPL, it would have done a great deal for popularizing cricket in Kerala. Cricket in Kerala still is more of a spectator sports and less of a participant sports. If you take a chakkar around the open grounds (maidans) of Kerala, you will find most kids playing football, not cricket.

Don't see what's wrong with that. Competition is a good thing. Everyone doesn't need to play cricket and it's not as if we do a good job in developing players at the grass roots level anyways. What's wrong in people playing football? Only if some of the clowns in the Indian team played football as well so we can get rid of them.

Kerala has always been a strong domestic football team. Kerala Police has been a strong club team, and has often rivalled Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.

But that's always the case in Kerala. I spent few years of my childhood in Kerala and I didn't even remember anyone playing cricket in school ground or in streets . It's always football. So it's not a new phenomenon . They are an exception in India rather than the norm.

Not really an exception. There are plenty of similar places. Goa and the NE for example.
