Maran faced issues over the Aircel deal but his resignation came because of a fallout over the survey that came out in Dinakaran newspaper on who the political heir to Karunanidhi was. There was an Others option (Hint: Maran himself) which got 20% of the votes. Azhagiri got only 2% and his supporters burnt down the Dinakaran office and 3 people were killed. The Karunanidhi family was enraged and got Maran sacked from the minister post. This was also the time when Kalaingar TV was launched. The Aircel Maxis issue blew out much later

This one was because of his role in the Aircel deal and CBI quizzing him The one I was referring to was his more significant resignation from the Telecom ministry in 2007 because of the feud with the Karunanidhi family. They later patched up and Maran settled down in a less glamorous Textile Ministry. In his first stint, Maran was the public face of the party and had a very high profile before the suicidal move to publish the survey
