Anakin Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? Malcolm Marshall once tore through the English lineup with one hand in complete bandage. He couldn't even move it and it is pretty difficult to bowl with one hand tied. If Tendu was indeed injured he should have come in to bat after Munaf.Good on Marshall, at least he could run and bowl with another hand.

gs Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? Why didnt the team management send VVS or KKD instead of SRT if he was badly injured? :wall:

He couldn't even move it and it is pretty difficult to bowl with one hand tied. If Tendu was indeed injured he should have come in to bat after Munaf. Sachin Tendulkar once scored 136 of the finest runs in the last innings against Akram, Younis, and Saqlain suffering back spasms when he could hardly stand. Lets not forget what the great man has achieved as a batsman in the face of failure in this innings. He played crucial knocks in the first innings of all three tests.

King Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? Forget the past glories guys and there is just no point in yet again quoting the number of runs scored in the past. Mostly guys here try and talk the past record but forget what was to be done in the context of the game. It was quite simple, India were 140+ runs with 3 down (after Ganguly's fall). From then on India needed anything over 100 runs with 7 wickets to go. Till about that time Ganguly and even Rahul Dravid were rotating strike, ensuring there were enough runs on the board. Out comes Tendulkar and from then on it was a lost cause. India after having looked like setting a score went on to display one of the insipid batting I've ever seen. Tendulkar started to bat like he was shielding bombs in the middle and not balls. Rahul Dravid who was rotating strike just shut the shop too and was even scared to get the bat anywhere near the ball. In the context of the game (forget the past it won't help the situation) they both played like they were no.10 and no.11 battling out there to save a test match in the last session. Was this the first time ever they tried similar tactics? Of course not. In the recent memory they have embraced similar tactics quite a few times and have stuffed up the game. It did not help Laxman ran like a man that was chained on both legs, bad decision by the umpire and the rest folding up in no time. Give as many excuses as you like but Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid were major culprits in this debacle. Whether India wins or not (no way will India win IMO) Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid stuffed up big time and that is the bottom line.
talksport Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? Can somebody remind me How Sachin got out in this inninngs ?
talksport Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? Between I dont see any difference How Sachin Batted in first innings or second innings..... For f**cks sake cut him some slack....There were f***ing negative lines.. He changed his guard and trying to score runs...and ***cking Asad....I have no doubts he would have scored.....Not a***Ing lose ball by Pollock....
The Outsider Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? Ravi, I am not saying Tendulkar played well or anything. Its obvious to anyone he stuffed up. But does it warrant dropping him from the side given the following circumstances: 1. He is India's second highest scorer and has the second highest average in the series. 2. He was injured. 3. He was given out wrongly. 4. He has made important contributions in the first innings of all three tests. I dont think it was the correct decision to send him in up in the order since he was injured. But how is that Tendulkar's fault? Okay, he might have insisted on going in but Dravid and Chappell should have been firm and told him that he is not the Tendulkar of '98 who could score with back spasms and in the interest of the team he would have to come in at number 7. Infact, he should have been asked to retire hurt when it was obvious in the first few overs that he could not move his feet at all. But how can you drop someone who has contributed with the bat in all three tests.

We all saw the same game that you saw mate and these are plain excuses. Tendulkar played fair number of balls and you may want to watch the game again to see if there was anything positive out there. I've just replayed his inning and tell you all the reasons you have given just sounds plain excuses. Tendulkar batted 62 balls and was not given out the first ball. Wonder why he couldn't even put 30 runs on the board playing out 62 balls

But how can you drop someone who has contributed with the bat in all three tests. I'm not saying he should be dropped but I've just stated the facts. People should stop citing examples of his yesteryears heroics. I've replayed each and every ball he played today to ensure I'm not being OTT here. Tendulkar has contributed handsomely to this situation India is in right now. I'm livid with Rahul Dravid too particularly the way he changed his style of play after Tendulkar joined him. Wonder what they were thinking there in the middle? Tendulkar was not running singles and couldn't convert ones to two and two to threes that were absolutely required if they were looking to win this game. Then why even get to the middle if you have no intention of scoring runs  One injury to Tendulkar and should the game plan be changed? Is he that big a factor for India?s wins? I don't think so. India has won in the recent years more often due to Rahul Dravid and Laxman's batting in the batting department. Tendulkar hasn't even played enough in the last few years. If you rewind back to Rahul Dravid's inning against that mine field against West Indies you will see he batted positively contributing runs that are most important in situation such as this. If India won their first overseas series outside sub continent it was because of positive batting. I won't take the easy way out by blaming Chappell here. I saw his interview this morning and he sounded quite upbeat. Chappell sounded very positive and had said India has to play positive cricket to win this one. He even suggested anything in the range of 250 lead should be good enough for India to press for a win. Rahul Dravid was very defensive and he said in the morning anything could happen in the game. There were still about 180 overs to be played and that hinted to me he had a pretty defensive mind set going into the day. Revisit the Day 4 thread I started yesterday and you will see how the day was shaping up. If Chappell even suggested Tendulkar should be asked to come back it would have created ruckus. People still defending his knock today just because he is "Sachin Tedulkar" would have torn Chappell apart. I'm convinced Tendulkar should not be given a center stage in such situations as his thinking process pretty much grinds to a halt. I'm tired of his watching him indicate to the opponent they are on the last leg of the bout.
The Outsider Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? Good post, Ravi and I partially agree with your take and understand where you are coming from. It was in this context that I said Tendulkar should have come in at number 7 because he was injured. Laxman and Karthik have been batting well in the series and there was no point sending an injured Tendulkar ahead of them. In the end Karthik ran out of partners and Laxman's run out was as much a result of the ultra defensive passage of play as his shoddy running between wickets. I am coming from the angle that Tendulkar is not India's premier batsman anymore and as a supporting act he has done okay in the series. Moreover, it needs to be impressed upon him that he is not the Tendulkar of yesteryear who could demand where he would bat and succeed in all situations. It makes no sense to have an injured batsman in the middle ahead of guys in form. For this Dravid and Chappell are to blame. They should have said in clear words "Mate, you're not fit and there is no point going out in the middle right now. A couple of hours of rest can only help you". He looked in obvious discomfort right from the first ball and was in no shape, mental or physical, to come out at a crucial juncture of a series. There was just too much at stake for decisions to be influenced by the idea that the Tendulkar of yore might come back for a couple of hours.
The_Black_Prince Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? Someone said today that Sachin's comment that VRV bowled at 145kph is because 120 kph now probably looks like 150kph to Sachin. That is funny.

I agree Tendulkar should have been told not to go out to the middle if he was carrying an injury and couldn't bat properly. That said Tendulkar should also take responsibility don't you think? Who better than Tendulkar would have known how bad was his own injury? From what I know he was even ready to come out at no.4. I agree with you at times you have to tell a person however experienced he is to consider options rather than just go out there and do nothing. Unfortuantely Rahul or Greg have far too much trust on Tendulkar I guess.
Anakin Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? May be, I'm sure there is no lack of eagerness on SRT's mind to succeed for the team, but sometimes that's just not enough. Also about playing with injuries, in the WC03 SRT scored the record runs with serious finger injuries
Mandrake Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Re: Time to drop Tendulkar ? Agreed that Sachin played a pathetic knock today before being unluckily given out but the crticism is way over the top...its fine to critisize his game today but the way its gets connected to every other failiure and generic statements like he never plays in pressure etc are simply not true.....he did play good knocks in this series and hasnt done too badly overall. I would blame Sehwag more who hasnt produced a single good knock this series....
CSK Fan Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Parth. That argument is heard only in sub-continent. I have not heard such sentiments coming from Aussies, everyone from Border, Healey, Waugh to now Warne/Mcgrath have been told to go, if they have not done that on their own. xxx So where are the calls for dropping Ponting from Australia? His batting has been ordinary(except this series) and his captaincy horrible. Still nothing
