Gwalior: It's not the first time that LK Advani has pitted Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan against his Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi, seen by many as a frontrunner to be the BJP's presumptive prime minister in the next general elections. Today, Mr Advani said Mr Chouhan's "humility" reminded him of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In the BJP, that is extravagant praise. Mr Advani said, "Vajpayee always remained very humble and far away from arrogance. Similarly, I found Chouhan very humble, like Vajpayee." It is being seen as a direct jab at Mr Modi, who likes to detail how he scripted Gujarat's economic growth story in every speech he makes. Mr Advani also said today that Gujarat was already economically prosperous when Mr Modi took over and that the BJP leader had only made it better. "I always tell Narendra Modi that Gujarat was already prosperous, 'You have multiplied the development there'... But Madhya Pradhesh and Chhattisgarh were not so prosperous... After multiplying the rate of development in Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj ji is still humble as a person." Mr Advani's contention is almost in line with the Congress', which holds that Mr Modi's success in Gujarat is built on the foundation that its governments had laid in the state.

im no fan of Modi but FFS Advani is 85, by next elections he will be almost 87 since he is november born. So if he becomes the PM and serves at least one full term then he will be 90+ during that period. A 90+ years old leader of Young India

If old man Advani thinks he can somehow play them off against each other he has another thing coming. The fact of the matter is the likes of Advani are not massleaders. While Atal Bihari had his stronghold in UP in the 90s in coalition with Kalyan Singh, Advani has no one stronghold. He was always going to fail.

He had done a great job in MP so he has also become a little ambitious lately and all this praise from Advani (and the praise he got in the BJP National Executive Meeting in Delhi a few months ago) has just made him more eager to go to Delhi. Of course he realizes that Modi is popular and there's no chance of him competing against Modi for the PM's post but still it doesn't hurt his image if a leader like Advani praises him so often. Advani isn't really trying to play them off against each other - he (like many other senior BJP leaders) has not been treated well by Modi so now he's supporting others (or at least trying to show that Modi is not the only capable CM in the party). ABV didn't have that much of a stronghold in UP - the credit for BJP's success in UP in the 90s goes to the Ram Mandir issue and the state leadership. The NDA lost the 2009 elections under Advani not because he didn't have any stronghold but mainly because he ran a negative campaign against MMS (who had a clean image at that time) and also because people didn't see him as being capable of running a coalition. In 2014 he may be old but he's certainly not out of the game - in fact more and more allies (be it JDU or Shiv Sena or others) have said that he would be entirely acceptable to them as the leader of the NDA in 2014. If his health does not deteriorate then I see him (and not Modi) as the leader around whom all allies would be willing to build a coalition in case BJP does well.

Chauhan became confident cause the central BJP admin decided to move bharati is rival in MP out of MP and graft her into UP politics. Advani had no base in UP. His Lok Sabha constituency is from Gandhinagar. As i said before, never a mass leader. the sena may make noises in public but they are firmly in the modi camp within the NDA. They know Modi is a fluent orator in Marathi and need Modi in the 2014 assembly elections in Maharashtra to woo the Gujarati vote in Mumbai and Thane districts. If there is one state modi will concentrate on especially its Maharashtra due to his linguistic skills.

actually its not such a simplistic view - BJP came to power in UP pretty much entirely on the back of the Ram Mandir issue. Sure, ABV did bring in some upper caste voters but he did not have that much of an influence and if was the state leaders who actually brought in most of the upper caste votes. BJP's strategy of bringing in Uma Bharti to rekindle the Ram Mandit issue has failed till now and she has not had any impact in UP. Also, recently the relations between Chauhan and Uma Bharti have improved so I think a return to MP politics may be on the cards for Uma Bharti in a few years. Advani may not have been a mass leader but his Rath Yatra in the 90s did help the BJP in all parts of the country - IMO his problem always has been that the people somehow don't trust him as much as they trusted ABV. IIRC Modi was in-charge of Maharashtra (and if not the in charge, then certainly was a Star Campaigner and spent a lot of time there) a few years ago when BJP/Shiv Sena failed miserably.
