Why are warm-up games given so much importance?

Aren't they just what the description of the game suggests... to warm up for the real matches!? I see a warm-up game being played between India and SL and cricinfo has live ball-by-ball commentary, cricinfo also has a picture of Kohli waving his bat along with a match report and there is also a thread dedicated to this in ICF. Aren't these games getting too much coverage? They might as well had played a cricket match that counts!

When Kohli scored 100, commies praised batsmen in same manner like they do in actual LOI match. But when Karthik scored his ton, Gavaskar used terms like fringe player, warmup, poor SL bowling etc. Gavaskar, a BCCI stooge and Rohit sucker downplayed Karthik's effort. Whereas Tom Moody praised him whole-heartedly. Warmup games are in some manner more interesing due to above reasons.

I think it is good that they don't go overboard with Karthik as he often plays a good innings and goes missing for next 10 innings. This probably is his last chance. He better make use of it. Btw KKD did get some appreciative words from all commies.
