randomGuy Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 In India , the weak are exploited. The poor are weaker section of the society, they get exploited by rich. the rich have a sense of entitlement. Likewise, the women are physically the weaker sex, they get exploited by men. Men have a sense of entitlement. In this context its correct to say that women aren't the only ones who suffer. I am not concerned by the rape and molestation stats coz those are significantly lower than other countries even after taking into account a reasonable estimate for under-reporting. I am concerned with female foeticide, partiality shown in how a male child and a female child are brought up in giving school education, status in the home, nutrition etc. thankfully, things are changing for the better gradually. But things need to happen quicker.
bihutoli Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 How the ****ing hell can this statement 'India is a dangerous place to be a woman' be controversial? I can't believe some of the whatabouttery here. Don't you ****ing get it? For a woman even her economic well being does not exclude her from gender based discrimination and oppression. Why would somebody contest this statement I don't understand given the state of affairs in India since I don't know when..
CSK Fan Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 So are you trying to say relatively more crime happens to women than men in India? Only difference is, crime against men do not happen because they are men. When a man is mugged or killed, it is not because he is a man but because he is an available victim. And the perpetrator are also men on the other hand, women can be raped and murdered just for being women and mostly by men There is a big difference between 1 and 2
CSK Fan Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 and what you got do you say about the fact that in India a man is three times more likely to be murdered than a woman. 2 times more likely to commit suicide than a woman. (let me know if you doubt these numbers) . And again a man is not murdered for being a man. He is more likely to be murdered because a man is more likely to be involved in illegal things, or be out late at night or being involved in fights with other men. None of this shows that he is being murdered for being a man. You cannot compare normal crime with specialized crime. Just like you cannot say that more white people are murdered compared to black so racism is not a problem and hate crime is not an issue. Just like killing someone because he is black is different from just killing someone for robbery, etc and the former is a huge problem called hate crime, similarly murdering someone just because she is a women is different from a murder for gain. Do you know more whites are murdered than black? Do you know more straight people are murdered than gays? Does that mean there is no problem of racism or bigotry in the world?

India is a dangerous place for whoever that can be exploited - not just women. Like the poor - they are prone to exploitation coz they don't have money. Females are physically weaker - they get exploited, we call it gender based discrimination.

CSK Fan Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Which developing country is paradise for women? Which country has developed without making it's women safe and secure?

I'm not contesting that, neither do I think is the OP. All the OP is saying is that India is unsafe for women. Its not ground breaking stuff really that went into that research. We don't need somebody from abroad come to India and make a documentary to convince us that women are unsafe in India. We know. For all we know, the doc might have been made primarily keeping the western audience in mind. However whats most gating is the 'What about this?' 'What about that?' that people are getting into. Most of us are aware of the other problems facing India, and don't need people reminding us about everything wrong about India in a topic specifically speaking about one particular issue.

Most of us are aware of the other problems facing India, and don't need people reminding us about everything wrong about India in a topic specifically speaking about one particular issue. if women were physically as strong as men on average, there would be no gender based roles in our households and society, there would be no gender based discrimination. All that is there because they are physically weaker than men. to me, how we treat our servants, laborers(the beldaars, mistris etc) , our supposed 'lower caste' people is equally bad relatively if not worse than how the women are treated. our insensitivity and moral bankruptcy is displayed in all these. maybe we should teach our younger generation how to treat fellow human beings(poor, women, the supposed 'lower caste' - all), that they are the same as us. maybe we could teach moral education extensively , compulsorily and even exclusively in our schools in the formative years of a child. i think Japan exclusively teaches its children moral values till they are 8 yrs old. Thats a good example to look at.
Tiger80 Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Which country has developed without making it's women safe and secure? Is this a serious post or sarcastic one?Europe became economically developed because of industrial revolution and colonisation.USA too became developed because of industrialisation and slavery . women's movement and their safety came pretty.Unfortunately even developed nations are still struggling how to make women safe 69,000 female, 9,000 male rape victims per year: get the full data One in five women in England and Wales has been the victim of a sexual offence or attempted offence. For the first time the Ministry of Justice, Home Office and Office for National Statistics have combined their data to provide a statistical overview of sexual offences http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2013/jan/11/male-female-rape-statistics-graphic And BTW many arab countries have high standard of living but everybody what is condition of women there is

Many countries more developed than india fair poorer than us here, some of them could be called 'developed'
