Ultimate_Game Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 Steyn's got more swing and pace than Anderson and is equalliy or rather better than him in swinging conditions. The last time Steyn bowled on a pitch that had some swing, he nabbed a 6fer for 8 runs. Steyn can sometime lose the radar and may not make the most of swinging conditions but Anderson is always on the ball. I hardly remember Anderson spraying the new ball or not making the most of swinging conditions.

There is no doubt that Steyn is a more accomplished bowler over the span of their careers, but the level of control Anderson has currently is as good as any fast bowler ever - as I remarked in some other thread, his current bowling is right up there with Hadlee at his best, though Hadlee was a bit quicker.

No, I don't think Steyn has any issues with control. I am not going to demean Steyn to say that Anderson is right up there with an all time great bowler at the moment. He is currently in the patch where Zaheer was a few years back for around a couple of years - as good as Akram at his peak, but of course Akram did it over a much longer time frame than Zaheer.

Like Hadlee he can keep bowling the same corridor ball after ball, day after day. Leaving comparisons with Steyn aside, what he does is truly remarkable. If you watched the test it would be obvious that the game looked completely different when he was bowling as opposed to when Broad, Pattinson, Siddle etc. were bowling.

Old guy Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 btw anderson lately in subcontinent to me has bowler as good as steyn.. wish zack remained fit like him :(( u urself said rest of bowlers are not as good as him i think its same situation here we need one leader of attack and when he got injured we suffered .. im sure england will struggle without anderson not bcos of lack of talent but bcos this is the guy they turn to to get wickets when no one else is getting and to control the game.

The "clouderson" thing might be funny and a good time pass, but people who seriously believe that he is only effective in certain conditions are way off the base. Yeah, none of the all time great West Indian fast bowlers were swing bowlers like Anderson maybe Holding but he was much quicker than Anderson, but many other bowlers have been primarily swing bowlers like Akram, Hadlee, and Imran, even Steyn in recent times.

He bowled brilliantly in India - Steyn has also done very well in India. The game looks completely different to me when Anderson is bowling as opposed to a Broad or Pattinson - that for me is a sign of a player right up there with the all time greats of the game.

I don't think he was completely fit during the series - yeah I know once you are on the field, fitness cannot be used as a reason for poor performance, and I am not using it as an excuse, rather an explanation of his poor performance in that series.

Yeah, the pitches were surely flatter and the South African batting was on a different level than the current Australian batting. Anyhow, time to hit bed now - way beyond my staying up time of 9:30.
bulbul Posted July 15, 2013 Author Posted July 15, 2013 Keeping comparsions aside , have to apreciate Anderson how he handled the pressure situation. It's not easy to bowl when rest of your collegues bowling garbage.

rkt.india Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 I think it is important not to bowl him when it is unnecessary. If the three others are doing damage' date=' then keep Anderson off. I think that is the clever way to keep him rested. He bowled so well and the wicket of Haddin was pure skill with an old-school off-cutter. You do not see them bowled these days but the English adapted to the dry pitch and he got the wicket because the ball turned.[/quote'] That was not an off cutter, ball was reversing and tat ball was bowled with seam pointing towards batsman and came in after pitching, not an off cutter.

Anderson is at his peak in terms of bowling, but not in terms of pace. He has lost quite a bit of pace over the years. Now his peak pace is around 87-88 mph (a few balls around that), averaging around 84 mph. While in 2007 on India;s tour to England his peak pace was around 91 mph(more deliveries at around 90 mph) and was more consistent in terms of maintaining his pace.
