MCG on track for Boxing Day world record crowd

All tickets for the opening day of the Ashes Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground have sold, raising the prospect of a world record crowd, Cricket Australia said on Friday. The rush to see Australia face England in the fourth Test has raised the possibility that the official record attendance at a single day of cricket will be smashed, eclipsing the 90,800 who watched Australia's Test against the West Indies at the MCG in 1961. The maximum capacity at the ground is approximately 100,000, according to its website. Tickets have been on sale since October 23, and CA said some were still available for the second, third and fourth days of the Test.

its 66,000 as of now all seater stadium. I think there were plans long term to extend capacity to 100,000 dont know what happened to them?

It was but after renovation, it has been reduced to around 66,000. Now Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kochi, is the biggest in terms of capacity in India at 75,000, third biggest in the world in the terms of crowd capacity. Raipur International Cricket Stadium, new, third at 65,000. ANZ Stadium, Sydney, is the second biggest with 83,500 capacity.

The India - Pak 1999 Test at Eden Gardens had an estimated attendance (we never publish any official figures) of 4,65,000. Full house of 1 lakh on the first four days, approx 65,000 who entered (and exited a little later) on the final day.

In India from what i know Dy Patil has the potential to be a 100,000 stadium from the 55,000 currently. As does Pune. both these stadiums have the design features to expand effortlessly. Problem is that at max there are like 9-10 major games in the year at that ground. Dy patil just has not got the fixtures to justify an expansion. If india is to get a big ground 100,000 there needs to be some interest in ranji/domestic cricket. Thats the only way you can have a big stadium which is used 30-40 times a year. The problem india has is there are about 60 major cricket stadiums in the country. Which are not evenly distributed. For eg mumbai has 3 major stadiums in Wankhede Brabourne and DY patil while UP has basically one stadium Green Park and Bihar has none of note to host international cricket as of now. Looking at Aus, they have at max 8 stadiums of which 5 are the major ones. Waca, Adaleile oval, SCG, MCG, Brisbane. All of them are used by Aussie rules franchises in the aussie winter. So your talking about the stadium being in use for like 50-60 days in a year.
