did he not open in place of gambhir when gambo got banned ?
My bad, you are correct. He did open in place of Gambhir in his first series because of the ban. But after that series, he did bat in the middle order (both at no.3 and no.5). But my original point still stands – Vijay has not been an opener all his life.

Rahane has always played in the top order in Ranji, cant he be an opener?

i honestly do not remember him batting in test cricket or first class cricket in middle order.. he has been proper opener in every format and only played in middle in odis and not tests which is totally different thing

Vijay’s debut coincided with the golden age of Indian opening – Gambhir and Viru at the top. So he absolutely played in the middle order in test matches.

Rahane has always played in the top order in Ranji' date=' cant he be an opener?[/quote'] Maybe, maybe not. I don’t know for sure. But we what we do know is the technique and application that is required to survive on South African pitches as an opener and Pujara has both. I wish the MSD and Fletcher think a little bit out of the box and ask themselves who has the best chance of surviving at the top as opener in the current indian squad and in my book, that is Pujara. Dhawan is a wild car. He may or may not suceeed but we have to take the chance coz if he does succeed, he will put india in a very good position because of his aggressive style.

but i do not remember when he played in south africa and failed i think and then in west indies edit he did play against bangladesh in middle order but not enough matches and he is opener in first class cricket unlike rahane who prefers to play at number 3
