One makes another sign a second contract to take lower than local minimum wage' date=' holds her passport, the other runs away from this situation. Who are we saying is the criminal and who is the victim here?[/quote'] lot of she says she says....The maid threatened for more money, work outside the visa limitation, etc. It's the Indian government paying, I think it was a job perk. She couldn't have paid more than what the government agreed. It works both ways... But why is somebody going to this length to get a small fish like her? It's doesn't add up.

Money talks, BS walks. She basically wants special treatment because of her supposed status in society. Hats off to Preet for fighting for the maid. There has been a totally unjustified attack on her character.
This is ignorance of the highest order. Devyani Khobragade is a senior consular officer and is entitled to privileges as a representative of a sovereign nation, India. I do not know why people cannot understand this simple fact.

Desh ki izzat has been compromised here and no one gives a flying F about the diplomat who lied and her only defense to that charge is diplomatic immunity. :winky:

What is the Indian response exactly? Idiots running their mouths off? Salman Kurshid, lol, what a complete clown. Not long ago, him and his crooked wife were under the scanner for embezzling funds set aside for a trust fund. He is suddenly championing the case now?
Yes the same guy who along with his wife stole money from handicapped poor in UP.

She has been shifted to the Permanent Mission of India in NY. Once she gets the State Dept accreditation she will be immune from any further prosecution. In India of course each and every US consular staff will now be treated like an ordinary person for security checks at the airport etc. Should have been done earlier, but better late than never.

Lie, cheat and steal but escape accountability on the basis of her status in society. Outstanding representative of India on the world stage this lady is.

India is asking to drop the case, she will eventually be sent back to India for the crime she committed in US. She shouldn't have been arrested , if so, not having to go through a full body cavity search . just because she was a foreign national having consular immunity. Why is that so hard to understand?

She may be a crook but she is our crook.
http://www.rediff.com/news/slide-show/slide-show-1-the-devyani-khobragade-saga-is-yet-to-unravel/20131219.htm#1 It seems like it is our Government's cheapness that has caused her all the troubles!
In the visa papers the diplomat had promised to pay the maid $9.75 an hour, but actually paid her a little more than $3. This was done with the full knowledge of the External Affairs ministry. She has broken no Indian law, but the payment of Rs 30,000 a month for Richards was way lower than the US standard. The passage for the domestic help is paid by the government of India. So are medical and health insurance. During the three year term of the diplomat, the assistant is also allowed free passage home and back.
The maid probably knew this before taking the job, but wanted to work for more in the US. This is like somebody from TCS coming to USA and then working somewhere else to get more money.

According to Kanwal Sibal, this kind of thing is done all the time. And Americans are well aware of it and even understood it until now (reasons: exchange rate, per capita income etc etc). That ****ing House Bit ch Bharara is looking to score some political points. I hope this **** blows up in his face.

If she is convicted and jailed then going by shashi tharoor's statements to ndtv about this being a common practice, a lot of indian diplomats can be accused of being slave owners and in danger of being arrested. And if diplomats are slave owners then what does this say about the millions of indians who do similar work in india and their employers?

US flew out the husband and daughter of of the maid on a T-1 visa. How this remained hidden from Indian authorities is befuddling.
Not only that, the husband and kid were issued passports, at the same time Delhi magistrate had case against them. :hysterical: Classic desi incompetence. The whole thing is hilarious if you ask me. No need for CIA missions to get them out of India, our desi chutiyes ensured this humiliation upon themselves. India can cry all it want now, these folks are never coming back.

What ?
From the link I gave:
Last year, Bharara’s office secured a high-profile conviction, former Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta, on four counts of insider trading. The Rajaratnam case also toppled former McKinsey senior executive Anil Kumar, and Rajiv Goel from Intel Capital. Bharara also made Indian tech analyst Sandeep Aggarwal plead guilty last month to providing information about a pending deal between Microsoft and Yahoo to a SAC Capital portfolio manager at SAC Capital. But to be fair, since 2009 Bharara’s office has filed charges of insider trading against 72 hedge fund portfolio managers and company executives, in the most wide-ranging investigation into Wall Street. However, the main criticism of Bharara is that the sheriff of Wall Street has brought no criminal or civil cases against the bankers whose actions helped exacerbate the 2008 financial Armageddon. "The civil charges that should be brought [against Wall Street] are there screaming out to be brought," former New York governor and attorney general Eliot Spitzer said on CNN. "And the fact that it hasn't been done yet is really staggering."
