I personally back the BJP workers. Clearly candidates need to have local connect. Exceptional circumstances like Modi fighting from Varanasi aside the rank and file MPs need to fight from the local areas. People like Jaitley for example need to stick to the Rajya Sabha or Delhi by all means you want to accommodate people then let them use the Rajya Sabha route.

I really dont know why Jaitley is contesting as an MP anyways. He is Modi's left hand man (right man being Amit shah who is camped in UP). Clearly as the primary BJP strategist he should be free to zip around the country and organise the party better in states like Orissa and Assam. Even Rajnath singh, I have the same issues. I realise that Modi will probably need a whip on the ground floor of the lok sabha to push policy through. But still that job can be left to the likes of Mr Rudy. Being an MP adds nothing of note to Jaitley. Or even Rajnath. They dont need to be elected to be important. Is Rajnath going to get a cabinet seat? No. He is going to be a party president handling the political side of things. So why waste your time?

so mulayam is contesting from both mainpuri and azamgarh. bjp to release the gujarat list today,modi might contest from either surat or ahmedabad.advaini may fight from gandhinagar, his old bastion.congress too will release another list of candidates today.meanwhile pawan bansal has filed his nominations to fight against kirron kher in chandigarh

for many years now he has had the "Rajya Sabha" tag attached to his name and many of his detractors within the party say he can't win elections so he always takes Rajya Sabha route. Jaitley will, in all probability, be the 2nd in command if Modi does become PM. He has his eyes set on a higher price.......if you know what I mean :winky:

^ Your whole campaign is negative and scaremongering... Won't work with Indian public this time. They've had enough policy paralysis... They'll be voting for positivity...

this criminal cases issue is just baloney. So you do nothing wrong and the opposition party just pings a case against you just before and election. BJP members and even congress members in states not governed by these parties will face the same issue. not saying there are not cases of criminals being politicians but in a country like India where the judicial system is weak you literally need to take it by a case by case basis. There are other issues as well, a huge chunk of the BJP comes from the student wing of the Janata party (the likes of Jaitley). These guys have got a criminal record and probably case pending against them because they went to jail on purpose to protest I Gandhi faking the emergency. As will say somebody like the TRS. Its fair to say there are parties like the SP or even the Shiv sena who will have criminals as Mp' for actual violent crcime or serious crime. But i doubt the % will be so high for bjp or even congress.

Analysis of Declared Criminal Cases Candidates with Criminal Cases: Out of 188 candidates analysed, 56 candidates (30%) had declared criminal cases against themselves in their previous election affidavit. BJP has 23 out of 62 candidates (37%) with criminal cases and INC has 33 out of 126 (25%) candidates with criminal cases. Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 24 candidates (13%) out of 188 analysed had declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their previous election affidavits. 14 out of 62 (23%) candidates of BJP and 10 out of 126 (8%) candidates of INC have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

Especially the last column about serious IPC violations is interesting. A few murder cases, but a few frivolous ones too (ipc-294.. which used to be serious during the british times. Most of these IPC's were created after the 1857 movement around 1860) They've analysed 62 out of the 107 declared candidates of BJP, and 126 out of 194 delcared candidates for INC. So these percentages are in no way comprehensive.

^ i have personal experience of this. My cousin in mumbai owns a business and was being harassed by another businessman linked to the congress, to sell up. He refused and next thing you know he is accused of rape by a women who he had never met. It took about 6-7 years to clear his name. He was seeing a girl or dating and it did not work out in the end because her family did not want to risk it. Its not just about the congress. Its the same with every political party. Easiest way is to accuse somebody of rape. I guess this is one of the reasons why police think twice before registering rape cases. Cause they dont know if its political vendetta or not. Our judiciary is just too slow and it hangs over your head like an axe. So in general i find a criminal record in general in India is not worth much. You really need to look at the evidence gathered.

btw like to add the flip side of this is that, many candidates use their power to suppress cases against them. So even the candidates who have no criminal record might actually be criminal. I have heard cases of MP's and legislatures in rural maharashtra being involved in rape but the girls are either paid off killed or too scared to report anything. So a clean record too IMO does not count for much.
