We are a nation not boasting of strike bowlers, so Ashwin should become a better bowler than a batsman. We do have lot of replacements for Ashwin in the batting position, but our bowling cupboard is dry and we don't want Ashwin to flop here.

But you gotto back it up on the field. Make no mistake, Ashwin is a tremendous performer for India, but there is still a lot of unanswered questions about his overall credentials.

Guptill was playing for his 100 in Ashwin's last over and kept defending every ball, if he had reached his 100 before Ashwin's last over i am sure he would have conceded close to 55-60 runs in his 10 overs. I definitely think he is more talented as a batsman than as an off spinner, and probably we can try him as a batting all rounder. That will help him and Indian cricket.

I think he got lucky that he got to bowl the 10th over when Guptill was at 99, Guptil blocked the first 5 balls and scored a single off the last ball. If not for that over i think he would have gone for 60 runs at least..anyway that point is irrelevant now. Ashwin unless he improves dramatically with his off spin will never be a huge threat outside India so the best bet for us now is to use his batting ability and make him a batting allrounder rather than expecting him to take 3 wickets in a game. If he can score 30-35 runs lower down the order at a 90 strike rate and bowl 10 overs for 45 runs and get a wicket or two that would be really good for us.

He has never picked more than 3 wickets in a ODI game and now that his bowling is toothless outside India i think either he should be dropped or if he is in the squad then it should be as a batting allrounder.

and we played Bhajji way past his expiry date,once a player has some success its very hard to get rid of them from this team even though Ashwin has never had any success in odis.

Others you mention have played occasional breezy knocks but were hacks. Ashwin has a test fifty in Australia and couple of test hundreds in only 19 tests and averages around 40 in tests, mind you.

We are not having a pace strike bowler right now, playing outside SC. Talk about a spin strike bowler. Only the spinners have given us the remotest fight with the ball, even in this match.
