Brainfade Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Chipotle recently announced that they are stopping the use of oil from genetically improved soybean due to their opposition to GMOs. The soybeans from which they obtained their oil are genetically improved with a gene for tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate. While their opposition to "GMOs" has been termed commendable, little does the public understand that the oil used to replace soybean oil is obtained from herbicide-tolerant sunflowers. These sunflowers are tolerant to the herbicide imazamox (ammonium salt). So, what are the origins of these "natural," non-GMO, untinkered sunflowers? Here's the story: These sunflowers were generated by exposing sunflower seeds to the mutagen and carcinogen ethylmethanesulfonate (EMS), and screening for mutants that could tolerate imazamox. The mutants that had this tolerance were selected, planted and used for oil production. So, Chipotle traded oil obtained from one herbicide tolerant plant (soybean) sprayed with glyphosate with oil from a mutant, herbicide tolerant plant (sunflower) sprayed with imazamox, slapped the marketing gimmicky abel "non-GMO," fooled everyone and walked all the way to the bank (along with chemical company BASF, which makes imazamox). Truth in labeling, indeed.

Agreed, although 99% is an exaggeration. Certainly fresher than 99% of chain restaurants. At any rate, they are not any fresher now that they have chosen to go non-GIF. It's just a marketing gimmick designed to cash in on the hysteria of the anti-GIF movement. Healthier? Let's see. I went to their website and picked a burrito with chicken, white rice, black beans, salsa and guacamole, plus a side order of chips. 1585 Cal, 65.5 Total fat, 10.5 g sat fat, 125 mg Cholesterol, 3385 mg sodium, 33 g fiber, 12 g sugar, 62 g protein. I went to McDs and picked the double quarter pounder with cheese. It has the highest number of calories; added medium fries. Result: 1130 Cal, 59 g Total fat, 17.5 g sat fat, 160 mg Cholesterol, 1630 mg sodium, 8 g fiber, 14 g sugar, 52 g protein. Chipotle is a big winner in the fiber category and wins moderately on total fat, sat fat, protein and cholesterol. McDs is the big winner on sodium and wins moderately on total calories. In the end, the high fiber is great news for you, but high sodium and high calories adversely affect your health, no matter how fresh they are. Plus you prolly paid $5 more for the chipotle meal :-)!! Don't get me wrong, I would pick Chipotle for the taste. But for health, there is no reason to go fancy. The keys are moderation, balance and exercise. Like I posted a few weeks ago, a schoolteacher went straight McDs for 90 days and ended up healthier than before - thanks to smart portion control and exercise.

So it must be good. BTW, there is no such thing as GMO-free cheese, unless they are using rennet from cow stomach extracts.
