Gavaskar most of the time played second string West Indian [ace bowlers. He played the full quartet/trio over two series IIRC. There was a good article on this by Swarnjeet Singh. Doing great against WI doesn't mean the batsman is good at hooking pulling. It shows the player is very good in playing short bowling. And the above two statements doesn't mean the same thing. NS Sidhu was the best player of spin in this era. Andly Flower was not far behind. But they played it entirely differently. Although Sidhu was better at using his feet, Flower was light years ahead with his sweeps and reverse sweeps. That doesn't make Sidhu the best sweeper.

But except for his very first debut series, Gavaskar played against a WI attack that had atleast one and often two ATG pace bowlers in it. I hope you realize that even an attack of Holding-Roberts and 2 other bowlers is kinda similar to facing the likes of Donald-Polock and two others or McWarne and two others. I've seen Gavaskar play plenty of times. He was an excellent hooker & puller, IMO better than deSilva easily.I'd say the same about Amarnath, Tendulkar and Majid Khan for sure. Inzy too was at par with deSilva at dealing with the short stuff.

LMAO. That is the only two innings Gavaskar played aggressively against fast bowling, while Aravinda tore in to Pakistan fast bowling attack multiple times. He has dismantled Wasim, Waqar, Shoaib and Imran few times. And when he did play West Indies, immediately took on Walsh and bishop at full cry. Aravinda played cavlier cricket and taking on short bowling was part of it. Gavaskar played safe cricket. Aravinda was never given a bouncer barrage after his formative years, no matter how quick is the pitch. Since he was taking on short ball, his chances of getting out was higher on short ball, but he was so intimidating on the bowler no one had balls to try it. That intimidation was never a part of Gavaskar's game.
