"There is misconception over new GDP data" : Pronab Sen, chairman of the National Statistical Commission LINK To Business Standard , regarding back series data to compare Economic performance with the past : So perhaps back series data will not be available by the end of they year as earlier indicated :hmmm:
Thank you, the TOI article basically is Economics 101. The Business standard article title is more revealing: http://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/most-critics-are-ill-informed-about-the-new-methodology-and-sourcing-pronab-sen-115042101069_1.html Most critics ill-informed about new methodology: Pronab Sen And that Business standard article is dated 25 April 2015, ie, 3 months old. Are you really sure you formed your conclusions about avl of data based on this 3 month old article?

Strange , the latest NCRB report does not even mention "impotency" as one of the causes for farmer suicides . I wonder which report he is quoting from . :hmmm: Even more surprising , number of farmer suicides in Rajasthan in 2014 = 0 . In 2013 it was close to 300.
Here's the link to the table http://ncrb.gov.in/ADSI2014/table-2A.1.pdf Do you see there is an "Others" category under Marriage related Issues?

Indian express picks up on the point that was made by me :hatsoff: yesterday

Even more surprising , number of farmer suicides in Rajasthan in 2014 = 0 . In 2013 it was close to 300.
" NCRB data claims no farmer suicides in Rajasthan in 2014 New methodology to calculate farming distress conceals facts , say critics "
In Rajasthan, at least 414 farmers committed suicide on an average every year over five years till 2013. However, in 2014, not a single farmer ended his life in the state, thanks to a new methodology adopted by the National Crime Records Bureau to calculate farming distress. In fact, the latest NCRB data shows the desert state to be an oasis of farming bliss, surrounded by distress-ridden Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat. In the latest NCRB data, farmer suicides have been clubbed under Self Employed (Agriculture) category. Under this, Rajasthan has reported 373 farmer suicides, all of whom strangely were ‘agricultural labourers’. If this figure were to be taken as representing farmer suicides — since all other entries pertaining to farmers report zero — then Rajasthan would have seen quite a steep surge of 22 percent in farmer suicides. “The change in methodology has rendered the data incomparable to previous years,†says senior journalist P Sainath, who was among the first few to bring the phenomenon of farmer suicides to national mainstream. “The new methodology enables state governments to conceal the number of farmer suicides across new categories. In fact, many states are now declaring zero farmer suicide,†he said.

I guess the minister has access to a more detailed report where Boner related issues are specifically mentioned.
That is not surprising. In the NCRB report for suicides in the general population http://ncrb.gov.in/ADSI2014/chapter-2%20suicides.pdf' date= these issues are specifically mentioned as factors: Extra Marital Affairs, Impotency/Infertility, Love Affairs, Hero Worshipping. I guess the detailed data for Farmer suicides (which is likely based on similar polling/analysis) also has a breakdown wrt these factors but some of them could have been subsumed into "others".

There you go. And stop nitpicking. The statement made by the Union Agriculture Minister was based on report provided by NCRB, and the details therein is consistent with the details of the report, and historical disclosures as well. It is then, in your own style, highly bewildering why Mainstream Media has tried to project this response as if it was something that the minister made out of thin air, and for the first time.

:cantstop: Another blatant piece of mischievous (and I am being too charitable here) reporting by media. Now for some facts, the 2013 report has one category - "Self employed - Agriculture/Farming" under which it clubs farmer suicides and others together. (http://ncrb.gov.in/adsi2013/ADSI-2013.pdf), It has even the disclosure "The suicides committed by persons self employed in agricultural activities do not necessarily means suicides committed by farmers only". In 2014, it went actually a step ahead and introduced twp sub categories under this: a. Agricultural workers and b. Farmers (which it defines as "The term 'Farmer' includes those who works on field as well as those who employ/hire workers for field work/farming") This means that the 2014 report has more granular data as compared to 2013. It's like the 2013 report had data for only apples. Now the 2014 report has got data for red apples and green apples, and of course their total being gross no. of apples. Rajasthan reported that all the apples it had was green apples, ie. all suicides by "self employed- agriculture" were under the new bucket "self employed - agriculture - agricultural labourers". Now the ultra stupid allegation posed is that, last year you reported there were 300 apples. This time you are reporting there are no red apples, but only 330 green apples. Hence you are hiding/misreporting data related to apples. Does this make any sense? Nope. And worse, these guys are discounting the other category "Self employed - Agriculture - Agricultural labourers" suicides by looking at only the "Farmers" table. As if the Agricultural labourers lives are forgettable and unlinked to the issue of 'farmer suicides'. And worse, especially when in previous reports, these figures (of labourers) were indeed considered part of 'farmer suicides'. It is sad that media is not even doing the homework which a lazy guy with a laptop and an internet connection can do from thousands of miles away from India.

From FT :

India’s government has signalled it will remove control of interest rates from the central bank, in a controversial plan that has been attacked by some economists and bankers as a threat to independent monetary policy but welcomed by others as an overdue modernisation. “I don’t think that is the right approach,” Chakravarthi Rangarajan, a former RBI governor, told CNBC-TV18. “I believe that the majority of the members must be from the RBI.” In a research note on Friday, Nomura described the draft code’s wording on monetary policy as “a significant dilution of the RBI’s powers”. Rajeev Malik, senior economist at broker CLSA, called the MPC proposal “disappointing” and said it appeared to reflect insecurity over monetary policy rather than the rumoured bad blood between members of the government and Mr Rajan. “Frankly one has to ask what use is an MPC which carries the risk of being dominated by government sympathisers rather than the thinking about the whole economy,” he said. “Indian politicians are quick to talk about India’s evolving global economic influence but, in some cases, have yet to upgrade their understanding of the benefits of independent monetary policy decisions.”

Modi will decide everything.
This is not AAP where Kejri decides everything. Any idea why you are missing from the AAP thread when people are discussing the Fight Againist Corruption Party campaigning for a convicted corrupt like Laloo Yadav's alliance?

modi Govt's incompetency a threat to National Security ?

From the Column by KP Nayar :

The lesson from Gurdaspur is that a comprehensive review of the Narendra Modi government's Pakistan policy involving the broadest possible consultations can no longer be put off. Why did the meeting between Modi and Nawaz Sharif on July 10 raise expectations sky high, only to degenerate into a farce ...? The answer is plain as day to practitioners of foreign policy who understand Pakistan. Unfortunately, in the present environment in New Delhi, those in government who could have predicted the descent from the euphoric heights of Ufa to the anger and frustration in Gurdaspur will not speak up. They will not speak up because the fundamental flaw in contemporary dealings with Pakistan is in the composition of Modi's administration itself. And it is beyond the pay grade of those who can administer correctives to point out this fatal flaw although it is serious enough to constitute a threat to the nation's security and well-being.
Modi is disadvantaged by the complete absence of a competent source of advice on Pakistan at an institutional level. This lacuna is unprecedented for any previous prime minister

On Ajit Doval , the Indian Jems baand:

To make up for this dangerous shortcoming in 'Modiplomacy' the news leakers in Modi's government have woven fanciful tales about Ajit Doval, the national security adviser, and dressed him up as an expert on Pakistan
vijayakanth_07.jpgEven doval's ex-colleagues are mocking his fanciful fictitious Tales about his undercover Jems baand operations .
" Among those in New Delhi who served with Doval in Islamabad, the current media spin about Doval's cloak-and-dagger activities from that time is now the subject of great mirth."
And perhaps modi Govt has started believing their own Spin/Propaganda/BS , which was only meant for their CheerGirls .
Sadly, Modi has bought into his own government's spin about Doval, which was meant for the public, so that Doval can easily slip into the shoes of his illustrious predecessor... Someone like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Jaswant Singh or Yashwant Sinha would not have been taken in by these fanciful tales about the present national security adviser
As an operations man who cannot scale strategic heights, Doval now compensates himself by making ill-advised threats against not only Pakistan but also China. And the prime minister in good faith, goes along. Predictably, the upcoming meeting of Indian and Pakistani NSAs is, therefore, likely to be unproductive, although there will be more of Ufa-style spin.
Propaganda and Spin has substituted sound policy .

:cantstop: Seems like Amiret is reading KP Nayar for the first time. Here's another piece from him - written when Obama accepted Modi's invite to visit India. http://www.sapulse.com/new_comments.php?id=A9749_0_1_0_M
The spin in New Delhi tonight, once Obama’s call to Sharif became known, was that Islamabad was panicking over Modi’s January 26 invitation to the White House and that Pakistan was banking on America to bail it out on Kashmir. Sources in Washington said Obama was relieved that Sharif did not put him in a spot by asking him to mediate on Kashmir or on relations with India, as was Islamabad’s past practice. Public statements corroborate that claim. It is clear from the foreign ministry’s statement that Sharif scored brownie points with America by being reasonable and asking only for “the resumption of bilateral dialogue, the onus (for which) is on India to create a conducive environment.... President Obama expressed his understanding for our position.†Sharif asked Obama to stress on the Indian leadership that an “early resolution (of the Kashmir dispute) would bring enduring peace, stability and economic cooperation to Asiaâ€. It is clear that the overall emphasis by Sharif was on “peace and prosperity in South Asiaâ€. He did not rail at New Delhi at any point.
The guy was swooning all over Sharif and Pakistan, while berating the Indian Govt for what it said was "spin in Delhi about Pakistan's jitters over obama visit. He cnveniently edited out Nawaz's actual quote
"The Prime Minister also urged President Obama to take up the cause of Kashmir with the Indian leadership, as its early resolution would bring enduring peace, stability and economic cooperation to Asia," said a statement from the Pakistan Prime Minister's Office on the discussions between the two leaders.

Another gem - Actually praising AK Antony's "mellowed" response to Chinese incursions, stating that it is the right diplomatic response in the light of Indo-Chinese dialogues. It doesn't stop there, but hails this "muted" response as

Behind such a reassuring change from Monday, when there was talk of a “1962-like situation” between New Delhi and Beijing, and Saturday, when hopes were raised of status quo ante, is the remarkable story of how a government — even one as besieged as the UPA — managed to salvage what is potentially its biggest diplomatic success this year, perhaps of its entire second five-year tenure.

A superb piece by KP Nayar in how to label secretive visits by Sonia and Rahul abroad as "welcome departure from VIP culture" http://www.telegraphindia.com/1110808/jsp/frontpage/story_14351990.jsp

Sonia Gandhi is the first Indian politician in a long, long time not to rely on the government or its infrastructure for medical treatment abroad. When former Prime Minister Chandrasekhar was admitted to the St Vincent’s Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York for prolonged treatment in July 2005, the facilities of the Indian consulate- general in New York were stretched to their limit in assisting him and his large entourage. Similarly, when Murasoli Maran, the DMK minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government, was taken to Texas in November 2002 to be cared for at the Methodist Hospital System, the Indian consulate-general in Houston had a difficult time meeting his ministerial demands.
Apparently, the author cannot make the distinction between a PM/former PM or a minister and Sonia Gandhi And towards the end of the piece comes this glowing, loving additional spin:
But there is a pattern to the style of the Gandhi family that is in contrast. When Rahul Gandhi made his foray into international diplomacy in October 2006 as delegate to the UN General Assembly that year, he behaved exactly like his mother this week. He stayed as an unlisted guest at the Millennium Plaza Hotel near the UN headquarters, refused a local cellphone offered by the Indian Permanent Mission to the UN and used only his Indian mobile with a number-blocking facility to call people in America. Rahul also turned down an offer of US Secret Service protection that was made to the Indian mission because of demonstrations by Kashmiri militants and Khalistanis in front of the UN, common during the General Assembly. Then too the most frustrated lot in the US were members of the overseas branch of the Congress party who could not get an opportunity to flaunt their presumed proximity to the Gandhi family. Sonia has always shown disdain for the idea of seeking government patronage. Even during her years as the wife of a serving Prime Minister, she would try to slip away from the official entourage abroad the moment her presence was no longer required at formal functions.
