maniac Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 This thread is in no way comparing T20 Slam bang cricket to traditional cricket....infact I find most 30 ball 70's or 20 ball 50's in IPL boring at times...I mean I am not a fan of Pollard,Anderson,Miller kind of players...Maxwell in beast mode is fun to watch though(Have to say enjoyed Raina's innings this IPL though) Anyways back to topic,there was a time when the best Test batsmen of their respective teams where exciting cricketers -SRT,Inzamam,Lara,Desilva,Fleming,Ponting,Mark Waugh,Trescothick etc were all very entertaining cricketers.....I mean you can watch their ODI as well as Test innings with equal excitement but these days the trend seems to have reversed......The best batsmen in their respective sides especially in tests are plodders and accumulators- Well Kallis may not exactly belong to the present era but in recent times 2 of the most succesful batsmen Kallis and Sanga are very boring to watch....I mean don't get me wrong,they have all shots in the book but they are just way too boring. Amla can be pleasing to the eyes when in full flow but their best batsman I am sorry as much talent AB Devillers has,he is not very elegant and that is my personal opinion so yeah sue me...for some reason his 120-150 S/R innings have these methodical approach that it is just not fun same in the vein of Greame Smith Now coming to SL I would rather watch a stroke filled 30 by Mahela than a boring Sanga 100 ,Also every batsmen that SL produces these days is god awful and perfect cure for insomnia. Similarly the likes of Misbah and Younis Khan are definetely not the most entertaining batsmen in the world far from the likes of Inzimam or Anwar who were very elegant to watch when in full flow. One of the most underrated test batsman of all time-Shiv.Chanderpaul has surprisingly one of the fastest 100's in test history but apart from that one off,My god is he boring to watch,I mean people talk about Gayle,etc but obviously Chanderpaul again is the best batsmen in the WI side which is famous for it's flair Now coming to India,our most succesful test bat Pujara often gets over looked because of his unorthodox technique and his style of play......Obviously Kohli is a joy to watch when in full flow but he is still behind Chepu in terms of our best bat. Clarke is another guy who is very methodical in his approach,With Watson,Smith,Haddin,Rogers etc the flair of Mark Waugh,Ponting is missing in the Aussie line up. Gutpill is the most elegant player to watch in the Kiwi team but obviously once again it is the methodical williamson that is turning out to be their best bat So do you guys agree.....Top Test batsmen in the world have gotten a little boring.

There are guys who love a perfect front foot defense more than anything else. What I would like to see is the revival of some great quality bowling. That's when we would know the calibre of the batsmen.

Shami-untested. MJ- let him replicate this for another 2 years atleast. Morkel-Needs to find the mongrel within him on a regular basis. It ain't the era where most teams have match winning bowlers. Not only pacers but even spinners. Where are they? In general, most teams and captains are also pretty defensiv barring Clarke.

People no longer have to wait to watch a Kohli bat, and even when he bats he hits the crap out of bowlers on flat pitches. Of the recent matches played I loved the batting of Kohli and Pujara in SA tests. That's because he earned each run and boundary there.

With a hundred and twenty coaches for every thing a player does, is it a wonder everything seems one dimensional and boring? The same ragged edges and raw gameplay which makes cricket so exciting are slowly chipped away to smooth-en everything Look at how soccer has evolved from the brilliant display of individual skills to the well oiled team show now. Look at when Brazil or Argentina won the cup and compare with how Spain won last time. Too much money, too much coaching, too much sameness. Every batsmen today is much more techniquely perfect than most batsmen from 10-20 years ago. And this perfectness is boring. Even tail enders do not go for wild slogs or play uglily.
