Top fast bowlers learn to be effective in flat batting conditions.  Akram did it. Now Bumrah is doing it.

In the age of T20s, if a bowler can't bowl on flat pitches then he is a misfit for the era.

Pacers like Wood or Rauf can't move the ball much. Wood does not get that much bounce off length either. I don't see great yorkers either.  While Lee and Shoaib could swing the ball at 145 k+ and even 150 k+. Shoaib had a great yorker too.

It is not just about bowling quick but about displaying a wide range of skills at high pace.

Ofcourse skills matter and Wood and Rauf have different strengths but some of these pitches with short square pockets make it really hard for bowlers unless they have test match accuracy.

Having said that anyone who hits a good length will bowl well. Too many bowlers bowling t20 lengths. Thats where Bumrah has stood out over others.

The good quality quick bowlers of yester-years learnt to move the ball as well as bounce the ball steeply while bowling at top pace.

The modern quicks, who are bowling 145 k+, don't want to learn to move the ball. And I see too many long hops these days. Ability to bowl good bouncers and rising short balls are skills that need to be learnt. Won't automatically happen because one is releasing the ball at 145 k+.

Just bowling straight deliveries without bounce has never worked in any era, even if released at 145 k+    ( And by bounce I mean steeper bouncer than is expected from that length ).

P.S .. Moving the ball at 130 k to 140 k won't work either.

Moving and bouncing the ball, at atleast 135 k tk 145 k or higher, while bowling in good areas, with good bouncers, yorkers and slower balls, is the key.
