My point is that a 145-150 bowler with baseline levels of skills and a decent enough seam position (not saying he should be Shami) will also ‘feel’ quicker than a 137-143k bowler. I’m sure most batsmen will agree on that. Ordinarily yes. But a few factors add to this. Like Bumrah releases the ball well past the bowling crease and hence shortens the distance that needs to be travelled. There was a study which cslculated that Bumrah's deliveries feel like deliveries released 6 kph quicker than a normal pacer of his release height. Very skiddy pacers feel quicker than non-skiddy pacers of similar release speeds. What I also meant in my original post was .... those bowlers who make the batters play defensively most of the time make them feel the dangerous effects of their pace. And someone whose balls can be left easily or slashed to the boundary may still feel quicker to the batsman but they won't feel the dangerous effects of that pace. 45 minutes ago, MK55 said: If as a quick bowler you don’t have a half decent seam position or if u keep bowling full-tosses, you gotta be thrown out till u get that sorted. There’s no argument over here. That pace is utterly wasted Agree. 45 minutes ago, MK55 said: Also, not relevant to the point here, but I’d always have a genuine quick with baseline skills and probably one who’s super accurate at 140-145k and then probably someone who offers something unique than having a team with 3 bowlers of the same type. I would love to have atleast a couple of pacers in the mix who are bowling 142 k to 152 k or higher, provided they have acceptable accuracy. Mayank Y has it now. Umran of IPL 2022 had it. I think things are looking up regarding express pacers in India. We have 3 of them now. Very excited about it. Edited November 9, 2023 by express bowling Suhaan, Mosher and MK55 3

Yes, Bumrah’s late release combined with his unconventional action definitely gives him as edge in terms of batsman’s reaction time. He’s already late in reacting. I hope none of Mayank Tyagi Umran n Harshit are wasted. And that starts by including one of them right now. And yes, including a bowler when he’s in a good rhythm should make it lot easier. Wood bowling at 150k will feel quicker if he lands the ball at a decent length than a 143k bowler. Nortje, Wood and Rauf are international level pacers who are there because they have the skills to make batters "feel" the dangerous effects of their express pace. Otherwise they won't be playing regularly as enforcer pacers. But 2 points here .... 1) In my original post, I referred to pacers who "look " quick ... meaning from the viewpoint of people observing those bowlers from in front of the stumps. That is pacers who hurry the batters regularly and intimidate them from time to time and hence " look " quick. This is the pacer type that I want even if he is bowling at 143 k ... because he is serving the purpose of a quick pacer. If he is doing all this at 150 k then even better, but otherwise not. 2) A batsman will, in most cases, understand that a 150 k pacer is releasing the ball quicker than a 143 k pacer. But by " feel " quicker in an earlier post, I meant whether the batsman is feeling the dangerous effects of his pace ... which comes from a combination of high release speeds, skiddiness or bounciness, accuracy and any off-beat element in his action, if any. Those 3 are enforcers and a major reason for their is the express pace they bring in. That’s the main reason for sides selecting them. Or else I’m sure they don’t outrank other fast medium bowlers with better line length bounce. I consider those other aspects of their bowling average. Nothing wrong in fact that’s good thinking coz u need variety. if you’re express, all you need is baseline level skills in other aspects. The problem is that some of our young express bowlers don’t even possess that.

Plus they have express pace. Rauf is losing sheen as an intimidator as his accuracy is below par even for an effective express pacer. In a nutshell, there must be visible hostility. It's easier for an express pacer to be hostile but it is not guaranteed. Mosher 1
