One reason could be that in europe and us most people watch on the net but in india not even 5% watch it on the web.

In Europe, most people DO NOT watch it on the Internet - first hand experience. Even if it does, Internet viewership is counted (sans piracy of course).

Well thats not true at all, the number of people watching world cup football will far exceed the number of people watching cricket this numbers are not true reflection as most people in Europe and USA probably watch it internet and also will watch in pubs and giant screens like the one below

I know where you are getting to but audience measurement is not done as simple as measuring the number of TV cable connections.

Many of the FIFA WC matches were played at around 1 AM to 4 AM IST. That would have had some impact on the number of viewers from India.

You do understand that I am comparing CT 2013 final with FIFA WC 2014 final, right? I thought about this point and this is the only one that makes sense but if the Indian population is "large enough" and there are 4 times as many countries which PLAY football let alone follow it - that statistic is huge and surprising.

Also it turned out to be a 20 over ordeal so may have done some impressive buissness. Also don't forget other asian countries like afghanistan, etc where it is catching up As far as football wc finals is concerned i am sure it missed out on huge asian viewership due odd timings. Very small no. of asians would have watched it live. Ofcourse the above is true only for asia. At a global level it is very difficult to compare.
