It's not as if India, Pakistan and Bangladesh do not watch football WC finals, either. I think accounting for every factor - that is still (if true) a staggering statistic. It also shows that something like T20 can eclipse football in revenues or viewership.

India's population ALSO watches football. Football has 4 times as many countries and more popularity that cricket has. It works both ways.

In terms of countries where football ,especially a mega event like the WC Final, is viewed, the number would be much, much higher as compared to number of countries that watch cricket. Also, I would think that many cricket fans in Pak/Lanka/Bangladesh/Aus etc would not have watched the Champions Trophy once their team was out (you can say the same about Football WC also but there the number of neutral countries which still watch in high numbers - like China, India etc is very high). I guess the numbers would be out soon....lets see. Though I would be very surprised if Champs Trophy Final had more viewers than Football WC Final.

One reason could be that in europe and us most people watch on the net but in india not even 5% watch it on the web.
That might be a reason. The ESPN App/Website has broken all records in US this time - they've seen a massive increase as compared to the Super Bowl, 2012 Olympics and the 2010 Football WC.

Not the whole population may be in metropolis area may be but not in towns and villages.

Many of the FIFA WC matches were played at around 1 AM to 4 AM IST. That would have had some impact on the number of viewers from India.
