Even comparing WC performances. 1999: Ponting avg 39.33, Sachin 42 ( including 140 n.o against Kenya) 2003 : Ponting avg 53, Sachin 59 2007 : Ponting avg 67, Sachin 32 ( including 57 n.o against Bermuda) Ponting has far better scores against SERIOUS opponents in WCs and has helped Aus win 3 WCs... Sachin ( if you take away scores against minnows) has fared much poorer than Ponting and hasn't helped India to a single WC win

on the question of averages, they clearly tell the tale. After a decent first few seasons as a batsman, Ponting has raised his batting to very high levels, averaging 66 in his last 81 tests...and on the way to break every single batting record of Sachin..which is even more creditable as Ponting has got all his runs on quick Aussie wkts and Sachin mostly on dead subcontinental wkts

About 10 years ago the very first few balls Sachin faced would tell a story. If he scratched around a little you knew he wasn't going to score much. When he was going to score big you pretty much knew because in about 10-15 deliveries he would have played all the shots in the book through the gaps. These days I can't quite figure when he is going to score and when not. EWven when he seems to be scratching around he will end up scoring big. Even if the shots aren't coming off he ticks the scorecard over with some deft touches. There days you cannot figure when he is in form and not in form. Either way he looks a threat to the opponents. That is the greatness of this man, he's a highly matured player that hasn't lost much skills.

This odi series is a big one for Sachin, he has to do what he has never done gefore in Aus, as his record against Aus down under in ODI s is very poor by his standards

Test matches ARE the real deal, but unfortunately Sachin's ODI record in Aus doesnt change one bit because of his excellent test record, it takes plenty of doing now in ODIs for him in this series

Dont care. Because the experts will evaluate him based on his Test performances which are phenomenal compared to your heroes.

Why only experts? Even the fans remember the players by their test match performance only. How many of us remember the ODI innings anyway, apart from those played in WC or in completely extraordinary matches? Who remembers what were scored in the last VB series? At least I don't. But tell me about the tests and I remember every inning played by everone.

ODIs are still the most favourites with the average cricket fan in India ... even then I cannot see how someone can argue with 16K Runs and 42 100s.

If someone wants to argue, he can argue even with himself with no one around. And an average cricket fan doesn't care about what someon's average IN ODIs are against XYZ at ABC country ata particular venue or such things. Who remembers how much has Steve Waugh scored in ODIs or how many wickets has Ambrose/Donald taken in ODIs? Everyone is more concerned about tests and why not. Tests are the real deal!!
