If Rahane maintains his average of 50+ this series he will....

have the same number of 50+ series outside the subcontinent as Kumar Sangakkara! http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/50710.html?class=1;filter=advanced;home_or_away=2;opposition=1;opposition=2;opposition=3;opposition=4;opposition=5;template=results;type=batting;view=series http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/277916.html?class=1;template=results;type=batting It took Sangakkara 14 series to have 3 series outside the subcontinent with a 50+ average(and that is counting the Hobart Test as a series!). Rahane has already done what Sangakkara has never done - average 40+ in a 3 match series outside the subcontinent and Rahane will have 3/3 outside the subcontinent as opposed to Kumar's 3/14! :hatsoff:

Well done to Rahane. But all this will be pointless along with Pujara, Kohli, Vijay...if they maintain decent averages if India fail to win overseas series. Likes Sehwag, Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman laid the foundations winning the odd series overseas and drawing a couple. These lot need to now start winning overseas to continue the good work.

Not sure how this is at all relevant. Obviously winning series is the top priority but the batsmen can do only what they can. They are no more responsible for the losses in NZ and SA than Kohli was for winning the series in WI. The bowlers have to step up too. In any case, there is a long, long way to go and I am sure they will win some series along the way. Even the names you mention were hardly winning overseas series left, right and centre. WI 2006, Eng 2007, NZ 2009....obviously Kohli, Rahane and Pujara have a long way to go but thus far they are doing what they have to do...that is score runs.

Rahane, Pujara and Kohli looked like seasoned batsmen even during SA tour against some very good bowlers despite having very little experience overseas. Normally it takes many tours for batsmen from SC to get used to those conditions. Pujara and Kohli haven't done much in England tour but I expect them to come good at some point but Rahane has carried his great form. I reckon all these 3 batsmen will become ATGs.

How the hell is scoring runs pointless? That's the batsman's job. He should be praised for doing his job admirably. If other batsmen and bowlers fail in their jobs, how is is Rahane's fault? This rewarding and punishing for other people's effort is the silliest thing one can think of

My contention is all these good averages will come to nothing if India don't convert it to winning series overseas, basically a hollow feel of satisfaction. I guess some people are content with such outcomes.

They will come to nothing because of failure of OTHER players and has nothing to do with him. So no idea why that would come up in a Rahane thread

Its stupid to say it will count for nothing. He is a batsman and his job is to score runs and as long as he does that, he deserves credit for his contribution. What can he do if India doesnt win test matches ? Do you expect him or other batsmen to pick 20 wickets too ? You are just clueless.

I said credit to him, and I also inferred as a fan of India it will be a hollow satisfaction if India don't win overseas.

That goes without saying though. Obviously the vast majority of fans would place results over personal milestones. That does not mean ''it counts for nothing'' nor does it men people can't be happy with batsmen performing. No one said if Rahane averages 50 for the series that would make up for India losing the series...as you are alluding to. You brought up something which is totally irrelevant to the thread.
