The Meerut 'love jihad' case is turning into a further embarrassment for the BJP which had raked up the issue when it was first reported. After the victim changed her statement saying she was forced to give a false statement of gangrape and forced into conversion by her family members, she has now claimed that a BJP party official paid her family Rs 25,000 and had offered them more money to stick to their stand. According to a report in the Times of India, the girl named BJP's Vineet Agarwal as the person who gave her family the money while the party leader has replied that he paid the family to aid them since they were poor. "My help should not be linked with politics. Had she been of any other religion, I would have helped just the same," Agarwal was quoted as saying in the report. The girl's father also admitted that while Hindu groups helped them with money, he stressed that it was because they were poor and not for other reasons. He also denied his daughter's claim that she was being beaten by her family members and faced threats to her life. The new statement will come as a further embarrassment for BJP which had played up the issue during the by-poll elections that were held in the state. BJP leader Yogi Adityanath, who was in-charge of the BJP's by-poll election campaign in the state, had taken the vitriol in the campaign to an all new high by talking of how Hindus should convert a 100 Muslisms for each Hindu girl who was converted due to this alleged 'love jihad'. BJP's UP president Laxmikant Bajpai had also extensively talked about 'love jihad' during the party's meet ahead of the poll, but eventually the term was not used in the party's resolution. With the girl now claiming that a BJP leader paid her family, it raises serious questions about the role played by the party in the matter. Meanwhile, the police have registered a case of assault and threat to murder against the parents of the girl. However, the girl approached the woman police station on Sunday and claimed that there is a threat to her life from her parents', SP (Rural) Captain M S Begh had said. According to the complaint, her family had forced her to file a false complaint and when she objected, they threatened her with dire consequences and that she ran away fearing danger to her life. The father of the girl has found support from Hindu groups who also see a conspiracy in this u-turn by the girl. The police said that after recording her statement in front of an executive magistrate, she has been sent to Nari Niketan (women's home) for her safety and protection. The matter of alleged gang-rape and conversion in August was latched up by the BJP whose leaders including Yogi Adityanath, state in charge of by-elections, exploited the issue of 'love jihad', especially in western parts of the state. Meanwhile other political parties, including the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP), slammed the BJP for stoking up a non-issue. They added that it was BJP which has orchestrated the entire drama initially. "The BJP owes an explanation to the people on why it raked up the matter which was unsubstantiated," said Rajendra Chowdhary, state cabinet minister and party spokesman. Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Pramod Tiwari has sought a detailed probe into the whole episode and said the role of everyone should be scrutinised. While the case appears to have weakened given the u-turn taken by the victim, neither the BJP nor the Hindu groups can escape the embarrassment caused by the case.

Reputation cannot be the basis for convicting someone and pronouncing them as guilty for a crime. For example, I cannot just lay blame on my neighbor for stealing something now just because he has done it in the past

So people were using Meerut girl's example to show how rampant love-jihad in UP. There were threads after threads on that. Now when truth has come out that it was BJP which was orchestrating everything, that same girl has become liar. There is little attention to facts like girl has given exact name of the person (who didn't even deny giving money), amount was given everything. But, yes that girl is lying now.

On Monday, the 20-year-old girl appeared before senior police officials in the northern Indian city of Meerut and said she was forcefully confined by her parents who objected to her relationship with a Muslim youth named Kaleem Sheikh. The girl identified as "S" - she cannot be named as per Indian law - said she feared for her life and sought police custody, in a blow to a "love jihad" campaign run by Hindu right-wing groups. The police, on Tuesday, lodged a case of assault and the threat to murder against the girl's parents. A total of eight people, including Kaleem, were arrested after the girl's family filed a police case in August, as right-wing groups protested against what they said was a case of "love jihad" - a Muslim conspiracy to convert Hindu girls. Leaders from India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its affiliate groups such as Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad or World Hindu Council) ran a campaign against what they said was a ploy used by Muslims to seduce Hindu girls, make them believe that they were in love, get married and convert them to Islam. Hindu right-wing groups have also claimed that Muslim boys are financially rewarded for the conversions. Shanthakaka, the head of Rashtra Sevika Samiti, the women's wing of the RSS, in an earlier interview said, "Muslim boys are encouraged to elope with our girls. Teacher at Madrassa S, a petite and confident girl, has a degree in humanities and she has supported her family financially since the age of 15 by tutoring students. Last year, in the final year of her studies, she decided to take up a job as a teacher in Sultania madrassa, one of four Muslims religious schools in Sarawa, a village of 7,000 people almost equally divided between Hindus and Muslims. It is common in North Indian madrassas to have Hindu teachers or students. S earned a salary of Rs 1,200 ($20) for eight months before quitting in April to take her final exams. S' father worked as a roadside bag seller in New Delhi's busy Lajpat Nagar market as there was little economic opportunity in the sugarcane belt nearly 80km from India's capital. Kaleem, 23, belonged to Uldhan village located 10km from Sarawa. S said she met Kaleem through a mutual friend. "When I first met him, he told me that he liked me and wanted to be friends with me. It did bother me that he was a Muslim but he was so caring and appreciative of me that I started meeting him more," S told Al Jazeera. In a few months, Kaleem and S fell in love. "He asked me: 'Don't you think we should move ahead in life. Maybe get married?' I agreed." But inter-religious marriages are still a taboo in the region. "By now, it did not matter to me. Abortion In July, she noticed she had unusual bleeding during her menstrual cycle. But when she consulted a doctor, she was told that she was pregnant. "The doctor told me that I had an ectopic pregnancy and it had to be removed immediately. We could only afford a government hospital. Kaleem and I registered as husband and wife and the surgery was conducted." Kaleem, according to S, spent his own money on the surgery. S' pregnancy and subsequent abortion were not a unusual incident. The statistics collected by IIPS, a public health organisation, show that 21 percent of males and four percent of females in rural areas admitted to having had pre-marital sex. She came home after the surgery on July 27, but her mother soon found sutures on her body and all hell broke loose. When S could not bear the taunts at home, the only immediate solution was marriage to Kaleem. Before it could materialise, however, the family found out about her plans. It was not tough to garner support in the already charged Sarawa community. Her father, with help from right-wing outfits such as Hindu Jagran Manch and Bajrang Dal went to the police. Among those falsely charged was the newly elected pradhan, Nawab, who has been in jail since then. Earlier this year, Nawab changed the small gate of a local mosque to a bigger one which led to communal tensions in the village. Since the case became public, several Hindu religious outfits have set up "fronts" like the RSS' Hindu Behen Beti Bachao Sangarsh Samiti and the RSS' student wing ABVP's Meerut Bachao Manch to stop inter-religious, by-choice marriages which they have termed "love jihad". Inter-religious marriages Lalit Maheshwari, the head of the VHP's Muzaffarnagar unit, earlier told Al Jazeera: "Once BJP comes to power, they will push towards a law to stop inter-caste and inter-religious marriages." Kaleem, who has been in jail for the past two months, has not received enough support from his own community. A member of his family said: "We have nothing to do with him," not because of the fictitious allegations of "love jihad", but because of the Muslims' prohibition on pre-marital sex and by-choice marriages. The latest case of 'love jihad' concerns a Christian woman from Kochi, who left her husband and married the driver of a school bus. She was later arrested for allegedly supplying SIM cards to Lashkar-e-Tayiba operative Thadiyantavide Nazir, who is currently in prison. Dr Sajan K George, president of the Global Council of Indian Christians, says that the woman -- Deepa Cheriyan -- converted to Islam and took up the name Shahina. Deepa, whose husband was posted in Middle East, started having an affair with Naushad, who was working as a driver. When she came to India, she came with two SIM cards and allegedly provided them to Nasir. Deepa Cheriyan alias Shahina was arrested in Kochi on Wednesday by a police team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Sunil Jacob. Dr George believes that Deepa, like many others, is a victim of 'love jihad'. WikiLeaks has published a report by United States diplomats that stated, 'Both Hindu and Christian groups have expressed fear and outrage at the plot, while Muslim groups have felt the need to defend their co-religionists against the conspiracy theorists'. The report said, 'The Commission for Social Harmony and Vigilance of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council had reported that there had been 2,868 female victims of love jihad in Kerala between 2006 and 2009. The panel had made several recommendations to parents through its newsletter, including a recommendation to monitor children's cell-phones and computers, so that they can be better prepared to fight the phenomenon and resist charming young Muslim men involved in the scheme'. The Kerala high court had also taken note of the matter and asked the police to investigate the cases of two college-going girls, who were allegedly forced to convert to Islam after marrying Muslim men. Some police officials, political leaders and prominent members of both Hindu and Christian communities continue to suspect that 'forced conversions', backed by foreign funds, was rampant in the state. The cable, as disclosed by WikiLeaks, said that Sajan George was convinced that 'there was a concerted effort in south India by some Muslim men to get Christian women to fall in love with them in order to convert them'. According to the police in Kerala, in most cases of 'love jihad', the victims are merely used as pawns in criminal activities. Many of the victims have no idea what they are getting into and often get into lured by the young men. This whole Love jihad thing is happening because of the general intolerance of Muslims regarding their girls getting married to men from another religion.There is an unwritten rule and probability that thye could be ''eliminated''.Its undigestable for them to lose a person from their religion.Whereas in Hindu/xian case they don't go that far. Hence all these alarming signs..There is no ''balance'' in this case. Three-year-old Ayan has not seen his father Nawab in two months. His mother Farida tells him Nawab is in hospital, taking care of his ailing father. The toddler plays in the courtyard of a large house in Sarawa village, Meerut, but is careful not to disturb a group of women sitting on a mat in a corner. They are reciting the Quran and “praying for the end of our ordeal”, says Farida, who has held many such prayer sessions since August 3. Baqaullah is 75. He never thought at his age he would be running around for bail for his son Sanaullah and daughter-in-law. They called his son a cleric and arrested him. “He is a farmer like me, he is no cleric. Party-baazi ke chakkar mein kuchch bhi bol dete hain yeh log (for the sake of politics, these people cook up anything).” Baqaullah has five other children, including three sons. “I tell my grandsons to stay away from girls.” Vasila can’t hold back her tears as she talks of daughter Nishat. The family had been planning for the 20-year-old’s wedding. “She was due to get engaged in August and married in October. After her arrest, the boys’ family called off the engagement. We had spent Rs 1 lakh in gifts.” Kaleem’s family says the “20-year-old” was picked up at midnight on August 7. “Musalmanon ki koi nahin sunta. Utha ke le gaye, jail bhej diya, jab ki uska naam na FIR mein hai na ladki ke statement mein (No one listens to Muslims. They took him away, put him in jail, even though his name was neither in the FIR nor in the girl’s statement),” says uncle Chand. “Now that she has come clean, Insha Allah, he will be released soon.” Nawab, Sanaullah, Nishat and Kaleem are four of the 10 who have been behind bars for more than two months since a Hindu woman, who had been teaching at a madrasa in Meerut district, claimed she was gangraped at madrasas and forcibly converted. On October 12, the woman retracted her statement, saying her family had threatened her into making the charges and that she had gone with Kaleem on her own. The trial in the case began on October 16 in a local court, and the next date of hearing is October 28. The woman’s retraction, before the police and city magistrate, is the first glimmer of hope for the 10 accused, opening up doors for bail. One of the accused, Naveen, charged with helping prepare papers for “conversion” of the woman, has already got bail. Nawab, a doctor and the Sarawa village pradhan, was the family’s main breadwinner. His elder brother doesn’t earn much with his “wood business” and the younger one is idling at home. Farida says she has had to borrow money to pay the school fees of her children. She has four daughters and four sons. Nawab was arrested soon after he had conducted the last rites of his father, says Farida. The next day, Nawab’s name was flashed by the media as one of the accused in the alleged gangrape of a 20-year-old of the village. The family applied for bail some time back and the next date of hearing is October 21. Farida doesn’t often go to Abdullahpur jail in Meerut city where Nawab is lodged with the other accused, but her two brothers-in-law visit him every week. Vasila has visited Nishat only a few times in jail. Her husband, a retired Railways employee, and two sons who “are into transport business” visit her every week. She denies Nishat tried to convert the woman and says she knows no “Aleem-Kaleem”. Kaleem, in fact, was not mentioned in the original FIR. His name surfaced on August 8, when the UP police said he was recorded as the woman’s “husband” at Meerut Medical College. The woman was admitted there between July 23 and 27 — the period during which she alleged she was gangraped at a madrasa by Sanaullah and Nawab — and operated upon for ectopic pregnancy. Kaleem’s village is Uldhan, 2 km from Sarawa. He belongs to a family of paneer makers. He had stopped studying after Class XII and helped out in his family trade. Kaleem’s uncle Chand denies any knowledge of the woman or her relationship with Kaleem, and says his nephew is innocent. The villagers, both the Hindus and Muslims, agree but say it was “immoral” of Kaleem to go around with a woman. None seems to have ever seen the two together, but all admit to having heard of their relationship. “I heard she used to meet him secretly. Just a couple of days back, she walked across the fields barefeet to meet his family. After meeting them, she went to the police to retract her statement,” claims one Kailash Chand. Kaleem’s uncle Chand says he has “no opinion” on ‘love jihad’, though he is sad that villagers “gossip and laugh behind our back”. He has met Kaleem in jail, Chand adds, and found him “in despair”. The woman is now at Meerut Nari Niketan, refusing to return to her parents. Her father admits she has declined to even meet them, and has heard that she told the magistrate she wants to marry Kaleem. “I would never allow her to marry a Muslim, but since she is an adult, I cannot stop her. If she marries Kaleem, we’ll go to court and sever all relations with her,” he says. While he admits to taking money from Hindu right-wing organisations, he adds that was for her treatment. Farida remarks at the irony of it all. “They tried to malign us,” she says. “Look how things have turned out, their own girl stands the most maligned today.”
