I have been using the Beetel 110tc1 ADSL2 modem(3.5 years old) with my Netgear Wireless router.Was facing frequent disconnections so called up the Airtel CC.The engineer arrived checked the line and then checked the modem. He noted the SNR values as 9.6 and 6.8. Then he plugged in his own modem and there the SNR values showed 23.0 and 10.1. He said that due to the low SNR values the link is going off and coming back.And i need to buy a new modem. I already have a wireless router so was thinking of just buying a ADSL2 modem.And i can hardly spare the time to go out and get a new modem so i ordered one from Airtel only. Need to know few things 1.Can low SNR values cause frequent disconnections? 2.What stuff i need to look into when the Airtel guy comes to install the modem so that my connection isnt screwed.Must say its been working fine uptill now.Also is there any MAC binding?If yes then how will i use my wi fi?
Old guy Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 about snr value what is your broadband speed ? for 2 mb its always around 30 for my 8 mb its 20 which is very good so depends on speed and no it should not disconnect frequently but funny thing is i am having disconnection problem today changed modem and it has been ok for 1 hour these are my values Downstream Upstream SNR Margin : 20.9 11.5 db Line Attenuation : 22.0 12.7 db Data Rate : 10240 863 kbps Attainable Rate : 22716 25080 kbps Out Power : 19.3 12.4 dbm for 8 mb this is considered good on my 2mb line it used to be above 30 even 35

Old guy Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Max offered by by Airtel in Noida is 4 mbps :banghead: although they advertise 8 mbps on their website you need to be very close to their box to get 8 mbps and connection should be strong btw here is trick to get 8 mbps...ask them for new connection they will give 8mb plan on it but not upgrade existing customer :cantstop: i did same disconnected my last line and asked for new one :P

Kalia_Test Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 I have airtel 16 MBps connection ( in Hyderabad ) and works really well...I get 16 Mbps on wifi ( on ethernet I get more than 16 :--D )

It is true that the older modems given by airtel wear out in a couple of yrs. I had same issue and they asked me to buy new one...but I came to know that airtel was offering new dlink modem cum router free with new connections...so I called and told them that they can either give me the new modem router free or I will cancel the connection and take a new one :--D...the guy saw reason and gave me the new instrument for free...works like dream ( also one more wire and power slot freed - I had separate modem and router earlier )

Check if your operator can increase the target SNR Margin on the operator side to about 9dB.. 2. Also check if he can install a DSLAM near your house. 3. seeing your data on attainable rate,I feel that you are using ADSL1 which is an older standard.Check if your modem supports ADSL2 or ADSL2+ and force it to that mode. 4. Finally if you are buying a new modem, you can buy one with modem + router integrated...

Kalia_Test Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 The new modem is 800rs.If i cancel and take new connection i have to pay 1000rs as installation charge. - There is no installation charge in the new promotion scheme here in Hyderabad ( free :--D ) - The modem router I got is Dlink DSL 2730U ( flipkart shows 1575 now...it was 2200 when I got it ).. Trust me...it was more of a tactic to see if they give for free or not...there is a saying in telugu - 'adagakapothe ammayina pettadu' meaning even a mother will not give unless you ask..
