While India, like rest of the world, is busy keeping a strict vigil on Ebola-infected persons coming to its shores, it seems to have forgotten its own stuck in Liberia — the country worst afflicted by the deadly virus. Despite being in talks with the Liberian government for a while now, the Indian government has sent no medical mission to the African country. "Besides the talks between the two governments in the past week, we have sent several urgent letters to the Indian Health and External Affairs ministries seeking medical relief, doctors and a specialist team from National Institute of Virology, but no response has been forthcoming so far," Upjit Singh Sachdeva, the Honorary Consul General of India in Liberia, told Mirror. Officials at the Union ministry of Health and Family Welfare are currently all caught up with the rescue operations in flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir and are clueless about the requirement. "We will have to check with the External Affairs ministry if they have received any draft from our embassy in Liberia. Medical aid will be sent if it is really needed," said Anshu Prakash, joint secretary, Union ministry of Health and Family Welfare. While the Indian ministries make up their mind about reaching out to countrymen stuck in the midst of the damning epidemic, Indians in Liberia watch as other countries send their teams to help out. "It is embarrassing for us when we see doctors from the US and China fly down to help with the situation while the Indian government is yet to touch ground here. The Indian community is feeling let down by this," noted Sachdeva. He confirmed the death of one Indian (though Indian residents there claim two so far). He also tried to play down the magnitude of the problem before him, claiming that the Indian population in Liberia has dwindled to 2,000 from 6,000 earlier, as most have fled. "The person who died was admitted to an Ebola treatment centre in Monrovia. We have information that he is not the first Indian to die, as his brother too, who worked with him in a pharmaceutical company in Kakata, died earlier," said an Indian from Liberia, refusing to divulge his identity for fear of retribution from the consulate. Given the mood, the Indian consul worded his confirmation of the death very cautiously. "The man died of multi-organ failure. Though he was admitted to the Ebola treatment centre, we cannot confirm that he died of Ebola as his reports are yet to come," Sachdeva said. But he admitted that three other Indians were quarantined for betraying Ebola symptoms. "Their serum reports are also awaited. They too are at the Ebola treatment centre," he added. But the alarm is evident in the voice of every Indian in Liberia that Mirror spoke to. "The two deaths have happened in Kakata, only three hours away from Monrovia. Worry about that no Ebola . in an unsanitary place like india, the virus will affect and kill a lot of people. also, it will take a couple of years before an effective drug or vaccine hits the market.

FischerTal Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 tbh ebola doesn't even require a drug or vaccine unless u have severe symptoms. all you need is aggressive support care at hospitals who constantly check the patient and give round the clock treatment to patient. problem in india is just like africa, many places don't even have basic infrastructure. also remember that this virus has had a near 50 percent fatality rate in african countries. this is why its so important for this virus to not enter india

One such treatment is music booster therapy. http://boosters4africa.com/ Peter Chappell, a homeopath, is peddling this crap. He says that listening to this music would work. Co-opting the suffering of people is criminal. To make matters worse, natural-products advocates are calling for a ban on the only drug that has a chance at working - ZMapp. It is an experimental drug and has had mixed results, but it is at least based on rational virological and immunological principles. Overall, it is appalling to see that society rejects science so easily in favor of easy, miracle, quack cures.

vvvslaxman Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 It is scary to read how fast it spreads.. But reaction differs from patient to patient. Some leaks blood some doesnt. In a country like India it will be highly contagious.

His worry is not misplaced - even if it is you can't point to worse problems and say don't worry about Ebola but worry about the worse ones. In order to prove it is misplaced, tell him how/why within the confines of Ebola.
