Press Trust of India ‏@PTI_News Centre has asked all states and UTs to ensure stoppage of Uber taxi services, Home Minister Rajnath Singh tells Rajya Sabha. I guess next time a rape happens in any train we will see the entire Indian railway shut down.

Not just Uber, ALL web based Taxi services.
HMOIndia: The MHA has advised the State Governments/ UT Administrations to ensure that the operations of the web based taxi services are stopped. HMOIndia: Such service providers which are not licensed with the State Govts/ UT Administrations are prohibited to operate till they get registered.

There are things which needs to be sorted. For example, the Culprit just went off the hook by merely deleting the APP, swithing off his phone etc. What system was in place to track a vehicle if the phone is switched off or the APP deleted and what Alert systems are in place in that eventuality? Do these Service Providers make it clear to the customers that they cannot track the vehicles all the time? These service providers give a 'false sense of security' to the customers when actually they don't have any system in place. Atleast in case of normal Taxis, the customer is aware and prepared of the risks involved and makes an informed decision. They are not lulled in any false sense of security.

On NDTV Barkha's show, there's one lady calling from USA, reveals that she had made a written complaint against the same driver of misbehaving, to UBER. But UBER did nothing about it...

Sure' date=' Uber was at fault and they should be punished for that but stopping their services altogether is not the solution, especially since the police also is to blame for giving the driver his character certificate saying that he had no criminal record ([url']http://www.thenewsminute.com/news_sections/2271). More and more of such cab companies are opening in major cities in India every month so it is the Govt which has to make sure that safety related mechanisms are put in place, strictly followed and proper background checks of drivers done - banning a company is no solution at all IMO.
On second thoughts, please let me know what steps Govt. Could've taken to "punish" UBER?

This is stupidity at its highest order. By banning UBER, one is just tiptoeing around the failed bureaucracy and the incompetence of police procedures. The accused apparently was acquitted of rape charges in 2011, I bet due to lack of evidence due to the incompetence of police securing evidence from a crime scene which could have led to the conviction of this criminal instead him roaming around free. And then he managed to forge an all clear certificate to get his taxi license. So cops should be going after these forging documents gangs to prevent the repeat of this incident in the future but NO...quick solution...ban UBER and blame it on them to hide our incompetency and keep public happy. No wonder, companies are afraid to invest in India.
