MCGGG Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Australia have a smorgasbord of talented hitting alrounders ATM, but how many can they play? Its going to be very hard to leave out any of Faulkner-Marsh-Big Show, nice dilemma to have though, anyway here's my best 11. Warner Finch Clarke Smith Mitch Marsh BigShow Haddin Faulkner Johnson Harris Doherty. But if I really had my way I'd select retired 43 year old Hogg as our spinner, he's been incredible in the BB, just a query if could handle 8 overs or so.

I don't think the Rhino plays ODI cricket anymore. I like your team: would substitute Starc for Rhino and Watto for Doherty.
Vijy Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Would have 2 genuine opening bowlers (2 Mitches), and the remaining 30 overs between: Twatto, Big Show, Faulkner, Mitch Marsh. Part-time spin of Clarke and Smith to augment all this. Frighteningly deep batting. All the way to 11. Would also like to see McKay get a few games... skilled ODI bowler.
bowl_out Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Warner Finch Watto Clarke Smith Marsh/Maxwell Haddin Faulkner Johnson Starc Doherty/Hazelwood Play Maxwell + Hazelwood (or) Marsh + Doherty
Vijy Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 In retrospect, would also want Bailey in the mix somewhere.
Vijy Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Horses for courses seems warranted here. Can mix and match different options. I don't think Doherty is ODI-class though, despite a decent record.
MCGGG Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 I don't think the Rhino plays ODI cricket anymore. I like your team: would substitute Starc for Rhino and Watto for Doherty. I left Watson out to balance the team, Watson's a batting alrounder and the batting is deep, he's also a liability in the field once the slip is removed, he's painfully slow, also he hasn't set the world on fire with the bat over the last year or so.
bowl_out Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Who are the likely pacers in the Aus squad - MJ, Starc, Hazelnut. Who else? Cummins? Mckay?
Vijy Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 I left Watson out to balance the team' date=' Watson's a batting alrounder and the batting is deep, he's also a liability in the field once the slip is removed, he's painfully slow, also he hasn't set the world on fire with the bat over the last year or so.[/quote'] Watto is a middling-to-good Test player, but an exceptionally valuable ODI player. As a fielder, he's not comparable to the rest, but I think he's a better bat (and a useful bowler) than Mitch Marsh. As I noted in the first post, there are plenty of bowling options even if both play.
MCGGG Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 Who are the likely pacers in the Aus squad - MJ' date=' Starc, Hazelnut. Who else? Cummins? Mckay?[/quote'] Johnson-Stark-Harris-Cummins.
bowl_out Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Johnson-Stark-Harris-Cummins. Harris not playing ODIs in recent times if I remember correctly
Vijy Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Who are the likely pacers in the Aus squad - MJ' date=' Starc, Hazelnut. Who else? Cummins? Mckay?[/quote'] Apart from Mary Jane, Stark and Hazel, I expect Cummin to be there. Don't think McKay will be in - lots of all-rounders and batsmen to squeeze in.

Vijy Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 This is the expected squad: Michael Clarke (capt), Brad Haddin (wk), David Warner, Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Steven Smith, George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, James Faulkner, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Xavier Doherty.
Vijy Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 It was out of Watson and Doherty for me' date=' Doherty is a good defensive bowler and I feel a specialist spinner is a must.[/quote'] Doherty's returns have been quite poor of late. By "poor", I don't necessarily mean expensive, but lacking in any impact. Frankly, I'd back Watto to get the same stats as Dohery: 8 overs 40-odd runs. And of course Watto's a very good ODI bat. Unless the pitch is very dry, Oz needn't select Doherty.

Vijy Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 I had the same XV... I expected the same XV, but I think 2 young pacers is one too many. Would have swapped Cummin with McKay, who's got one of the best ODI records amongst current bowlers. Still, it doesn't matter of course since the team is already very strong.
BeautifulGame Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Finch Warner Watson Clarke Smith Marsh Haddin Faulkner Johnson Harris Dohetry Squad : Maxwell Starc Pattinson Bailey
MCGGG Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 Harris not playing ODIs in recent times if I remember correctly Pretty sure he's made himself available, and considering his overall cricketing ability I'd pick him before Stark or Hazlewood, not sure id want 2 left arm quicks in the one team anyway.
