Have best 9 teams ' date=' make them play with each other, and select top 2 for final..No semifinal is required. That will be the best format.[/quote'] Knock out matches bring more money...

Hope they remove the minnows in the next world cup and save us from the borefest
Minnows are the reason why this World Cup isn't pure ****.

Try doing that with 14 or 16 teams :finger:
Doable. With 14 teams playing each other with 2 SF and final is 94 matches .They just have to play 2 matches each day and schedule minnow matches to smaller grounds. With 10 teams playing each other is 48 matches including 2 SF and 1 finals. Could be completed in 24 days.

What I would love? 4 groups of 4. Every team has to qualify bar the host like in the FIFA WC which this will take place in 2017/18. Team 1: England This leaves 14 teams to qualify. So you have the European section with Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Italy, Norway, etc. The Top 3 teams make it Team 2: Ireland Team 3: Scotland Team 4: Netherlands Then we have the African section with South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Namibia, Uganda and so on. The Top 2 make it Team 5: South Africa Team 6: Zimbabwe Then we have the Americas section where 2 teams qualify: Team 7: West Indies Team 8: Canada Then Asia with let's say 5 Team 9: India Team 10: Sri Lanka Team 11: Pakistan Team 12: B'desh Team 13: Afghanistan Then Oceania with 3 spots Team 14: Australia Team 15: New Zealand Team 16: Papua New Guinea Then it goes by seedings on where you finished in qualifying plus ICC rank So. Pot 1: England, Australia, India, South Africa Pot 2: New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland, West Indies Pot 3: Pakistan, B'desh, Zimbabwe, Scotland Pot 4: Afghanistan, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Canada Okay so the Teams are drawn so they haven't faced each other in qualifying except for one overlap Group 1: England, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan Group 2: Australia, Sri Lanka, Scotland, Canada Group 3: India, New Zealand, B'desh, Netherlands Group 4: South Africa, Ireland, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea Let's say England, West Indies, Australia Sri Lanka, India NZ, SA and Pakistan make it through. Then G1W v. G4L (So ENG v. PAK) G3W v. G2L (NZ v. Sri Lanka) G2W v. G3L (Australia v. India) G4W v. G1L (South Africa v. West Indies) Then so on to so on. So you are playing in WC at least 31 matches with all the fun of qualifying to give more exposure to cricket around the world. It is all a pipedream that will never happen but still it would be pretty sweet.

15 teams. 3 groups of 5. Top 2 qualify for super 6. 3rd placed teams in 3 groups play each other once each in a little tri series. Top 2 out of these 3 also join the super 6. Super 6 - top 2 reach final. Final. Could look like this: Group A Australia New Zealand Pakistan Scotland Namibia Group B India Sri Lanka West Indies Ireland UAE Group C South Africa England Bangladesh Zimbabwe Afghanistan You have an expansive World Cup where Associates get a shot - check Teams arent punished for one bad day - check Big 3 guaranteed plenty of games unless they are inexcusably awful - check All group games have meaning - check Odds are it'll be way shorter than the current one too, with it scheduled so that most days any low ranked teams arent the only game of the day e.g in group B West Indies vs UAE, and in the afternoon you can have India vs Sri Lanka.

^^ 15 teams looks good. But a simple super six (with top 2 from each group) should work Grouping should be based on ICC Raning as below: Group A : 1,6,9,10,15 Group B : 2,5,8,11,14 Group C : 3,4,7,12,13 Top 2 from each group in Super 6... Semis... Finals

The current WC format needs the following tweaks - 1) Revamp the league phase - If it is going to be an 8 team tournament starting the next edition (which i support) - meaning it is 4 teams per group - then every team plays every other team in its group 2 twice, making it a total of 6 games. 2) Top 2 teams from each group qualify directly for the semis 3) IPL style knock-out phase - Team 1 plays Team 2, Winner directly qualifies for final. Loser of Team versus Team 2 plays winner of Team 3 versus Team 4 game. Winner of that game goes to the final 4) Best of 3 games in the final to determine winner.

I agree. The group stage is almost useless. It hardly helps you with the knockouts. There should be a super 8, with the top 4 going through to the semi-finals. If you want more teams in the world cup then have two super 7s or something, with the top two from both groups going through to the semi-finals.
