The old saying about 'overnight sensations take years to make' is true about AB. He's been producing incredible, record-breaking displays for many years, it's only now – with the focus and attention of the whole world – that people are really taking notice of his genius. To be fair, he has upped the tempo a bit recently! But I can honestly say I am not surprised. He could do things as a 21-year-old on international debut which nobody else could do. But the same applied to him at the age of about eight years onwards. There was a turning point in 2008 when he was dismissed softly against England in the Lord's Test match, chipping a catch to mid-on. Graeme Smith and Mickey Arthur spoke frankly – and without any soft edges. They said the time had come to deliver, to deliver on his talent. He made 174 in the next Test match at Headingley. It set up our series win, but more importantly, he learned how to manage his talent.

Avg 62 + for the last 7 years in both formats .57 in Aus and 54 in Eng . Probably the best batsman since Bradman. His transformation since 2008 is extraordinary.

On the third evening (of the Lord’s Test, South Africa versus England, 2008), Graeme and I spoke in very strong terms to AB de Villiers about what it meant to be an international cricketer and what ‘taking responsibility’ actually meant. He had batted perfectly, and without any difficulty, in reaching 42 before chipping a tame and soft catch to mid-on. Graeme began the conversation by telling AB that he was not doing justice to his talent, and that he certainly wasn’t justifying his place in the team. These were very strong words, and I contributed many more of my own. AB didn’t take it very well at all, and felt he was being picked on when so many others had also failed. But it needed to be said; he needed to know that stylish 40s were of absolutely no use in Test cricket, and that we knew he had the ability to score big hundreds. And now was the time to start delivering them. In the second Test, at Headingley, when AB made 174, he raised and pointed his bat almost aggressively at the two of us, who happened to be sitting together on the tiny balcony. Point made. Point taken. On both sides. Although Graeme and I felt far more vindicated than he did!
